We are now just four weeks from the end of the NFL 2021 regular season and the first of those weeks begins with the Thursday Night Football which this week could scarcely be bigger as the Los Angeles Chargers host the Kansas City Chiefs in a huge AFC West showdown.
Top spot in the division is on the line here and with just three matches remaining after this one to have your destiny in your own hands is the position everyone wants to be in. That will ensure we get an extremely competitive encounter here.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers will not only hit the front in the division with a win here, one which would be their three straight win, but they would also have the tiebreaker over the Kansas City Chiefs having already beaten them earlier in the season. When the season started I think it is fair to say that most judges would have assumed that if someone was at their own Super Bowl party it would be the Los Angeles Rams but the Chargers haven’t read that script.
The Chargers offense has really come to the party this season, led by the impressive Justin Herbert and he along with the talented receiving core are putting Los Angeles in a place where they should make the playoffs whether through winning the division or as a wildcard. They will need to tighten up defensively if they are to make it to their own party but for now they are a great team to watch and that shouldn’t change here.

Kansas City Chiefs
Remember six weeks ago when the Kansas City Chiefs were 3-4 for the season and labouring to the extent that people were writing them off. Six wins later and people are talking about them as the likely winners of the AFC such is the fickle nature of sport. The good thing if you are a Chiefs fan is that there is still more to come from them. The only time their offense has shown up this season has been in the two matches against the Las Vegas Raiders. The rest of the time they have just done enough to get the job done in this winning run.
Kansas City had stepped up on defence throughout the course of this season but Chris Jones is observing the health and safety protocols so he could be missing for this match which would be a huge blow. I think the Chiefs defence is going to need to step up and be counted here anyway but they certainly are if Jones is out. One thing which will help the Chiefs here is having Clyde Edwards-Helaire back. The Chargers have the worst rush defence in the league so CEH comes back at the right time.
Betting
It will come as no surprise to anyone that I’m not going to get involved in the match betting. I rarely do on these Thursday Night matches because of the twist the short turnaround brings. I wouldn’t have betted on the outcome here anyway because I think the over is the best bet for the night. I have mentioned a few times when I have previewed the Los Angeles Chargers this season that they get embroiled in shootouts a little too easily for my liking and that could easily happen here.
The Chiefs’ offense came to the party last week and now they get to go up against a bashed up Chargers defence that has given up a stack of points over the course of the season. If Edwards-Helaire gets going then he could set up the deep plays down the field and points will come naturally. If Chris Jones is out for the Chiefs then Justin Herbert could pick off the Kansas City defence himself all night and so I think we’ll go beyond 52.5 points in this one.
