Premier League 2021-22 – Boxing Day Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The Boxing Day card in the Premier League has already been shortened because of Covid-19 issues with a couple of teams but despite that we are left with seven matches to get stuck into on what is usually a very exciting day of football.

Thankfully the TV matches have gone unscathed so we have three of the seven games to enjoy over the course of the afternoon and evening. The earlier afternoon games will have the usual ways of staying up to date with and there are some good ones among them.

Sunday’s fixtures are as follows: (3pm unless stated; UK TV in brackets)

Manchester City v Leicester City

Norwich City v Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur v Crystal Palace (BT Sport 1)

West Ham United v Southampton

Aston Villa v Chelsea (5.30pm – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)

Brighton & Hove Albion v Brentford (8pm – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)

Preview

The televised matches come at the end of what looks to be a good day of action in the top flight on Boxing Day. The first of those sees Steven Gerrard and his Aston Villa side look to be the latest team to cause Chelsea problems in the Premier League. The Blues have had plenty of Covid issues recently so might be there for the taking. Another team who have had their problems with the virus are Brentford and they are involved in the second of the TV matches. They head to the coast to take on a Brighton and Hove Albion side who will be looking to snap an 11 match winless run.

The leaders Manchester City are involved in what might well be the pick of the matches across the day. They welcome a Leicester City side who put give past them at the Etihad Stadium last term and will be looking to do something similar in one of the 3pm kick offs. Arsenal will be looking to consolidate fourth spot when they head to bottom placed Norwich City but should they slip up then West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur could take advantage. They host Southampton and Crystal Palace respectively.

Betting

I’ll go with one bet in the Premier League on Boxing Day and it comes in the form of the match between the two London sides Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace. I like the idea of over 2.5 goals here at even money. I mentioned last week how I expect Tottenham to come good under Antonio Conte from an attacking sense but also that it will take January to come around for him to fix their defence and that was exactly how we saw things play out against Liverpool.

I have also mentioned all season that Crystal Palace are offering a lot more from an attacking standpoint under Patrick Vieira and there are plenty of signs that is the case. That is coming at the expense of the tightness of their defence so I think we are in for something of an open game here, one which I think can be high scoring. Teams tend to have a go on Boxing Day to provide their fans with some late Christmas cheer. I think these two will contribute three goals between them.
