Africa Cup of Nations 2021 – Monday 24th January Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament continues on Monday when another two knockout matches take place out in Cameroon on a night where the host nation will look to move into the quarter finals of the event.

Cameroon are the big draw on Monday with three of the minnows or lesser sides in action as well, each with their own ambitions to make it into the last eight of what is fast becoming a wide open tournament after the exit of Nigeria on Sunday.

Guinea vs Gambia (16.00 – Sky Main Event, Sky Premier League & Sky Football)

The first of the two matches on the day sees the Group B runners up Guinea taking on the second placed side from Group F in the shape of Gambia in what looks like being much the more even game of the two on the schedule.

These two sides both finished second in their respective groups but Gambia impressed me a lot more than Guinea did. Guinea had done most of their work with an unconvincing win over Malawi in their opening match before a draw with a Senegal team who have flattered to deceive so far and then a loss to already eliminated Zimbabwe in their third game. Gambia have gone through their group unbeaten with wins over Mauritania and Tunisia with a draw against Mali mixed in. Gambia have scored in each of their matches and finishing above and beating Tunisia looks a good result after what they achieved on Sunday. Guinea have looked very poor in front of goal and they will be without the driving force in their midfield in Naby Keita as the Liverpool man is suspended after picking up two yellows. That makes me think that Gambia are the side to be on here. I’ll take them on the Asian line.

Cameroon vs Comoros (19.00 – Sky Sports Premier League & BBC iPlayer)

The second match of the day is the one which sees the host nation looking to set up a quarter final against the winner of the earlier match when Cameroon host the minnows Comoros who are enjoying a fantastic tournament debut.

Comoros have been a breath of fresh air but there was always a sense that we wouldn’t get through a month-long tournament without Covid having a major say on it and that has happened here. Comoros have been hit hard by the virus to the extent that they don’t have a goalkeeper for this match. Two of their three keepers have Covid and the other is injured so an outfield player is going to have to be between the sticks for the minnows in this match. That basically ends any hope they had of one of the biggest shocks in the history of this tournament and has turned this one into how many Cameroon want to win by. They’ve run up the score already in this competition when putting Ethiopia to the sword but this isn’t a tournament to be chasing huge handicaps especially should Cameroon want to preserve some energy for the tougher matches to come.
