After a bumper day of big racing on Saturday, the high profile offering doesn’t end as we have the second classic race of the season taking place at Newmarket on Sunday when the 1000 Guineas is run midway through the afternoon.

After bagging the winner of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday evening we have had a good look through the card for the 1000 Guineas and we are going to oppose the hot favourite with one down the betting.

It’s the girls turn today as 20 fillies head down to the start for this, the second classic of the season, the 1000 Guineas.  In what’s a top quality renewal, Dermot Weld’s Tahiyra looks a very short price at under 2/1 but in fairness, she’s won both her starts including the Moyglare.  The trainer has stated this may come a couple of weeks too soon so she’s not one to be getting involved with at the price.  She beat Meditate in the Moyglare, with the runner up being the one Aiden O’Brien relies on and he’ll be hoping for an upturn in fortunes after both Augustus Rodin and Little Big Bear disappointed in the 2000 Guineas yesterday.  Mediate won at the Breeders Cup over this trip and she’s got a big chance here.  Ralph Beckett’s Remarquee won the Fred Darling on reappearance and she’s also 2 from2 but she still looked a little inexperienced which might be a worry at a track like Newmarket.  Dream Of Love is the one for Appleby / Buick but whilst he went down as an unlucky loser last time out, he has been beaten on 2 of his career starts by rivals running here.  Lezoo looked top class at 2 but over 6 furlongs so there are stamina question marks and Mammas Girl is another that’s 2 from 2, with winning form here most recently in the Nell Gwyn.

Mawj – The selection is amongst the most experienced in the field with 7 runs under her belt and her form is right up there too.  She raced exclusively over 6 furlongs last year, winning 2 of 5 starts including a Group 2 here.  She also ran well in defeat, finishing 2nd behind Meditate in the Albany and then 3rd behind that same rival and Lezoo in the Cheveley Park.   In the latter race, she stayed on really well but was just a little tapped for toe at a crucial stage, suggesting a step up in trip would see her in a better light.  So it proved, as she went to Meydan winning the Jumeirah Fillies Classic from a fast finishing Dream Of Love with the pair coming clear of the field.  That was on soft ground proving she’ll enjoy today’s conditions too.  However, it was her most recent run that took the eye when she landed the Jumeirah Fillies Guineas over this trip by an eased down 8 lengths.  She raced prominently that day and just kicked clear off the bend to win as easy as you like.   Admittedly, this is a tougher race but it wouldn’t surprise me if she bounced out of the stalls and makes all, at a track where it’s not that easy to make up ground.   She looks a very good each way bet.
