The MLS weekend concludes on Sunday evening when a couple of matches take place in the Western Conference as we head towards the second half of the MLS 2023 campaign, one which has gained in profile over the last week.
Both matches are available to watch via Apple TV. You don’t need to be a subscriber to the MLS Season Pass to watch as both are free for Apple TV subscribers. They are also available with the bookmakers but you’ll need to be a night owl to watch the second one.
St Louis City SC vs LA Galaxy (18.00)
The opening match of the Sunday show comes from CityPark as the leaders of the Western Conference, St Louis City SC, welcome rock bottom LA Galaxy in a clash which could tell us plenty about both teams.
This has been a tough campaign so far for the Galaxy and with their transfer restrictions in the upcoming window in force things are not likely to get better quickly. They could have done with the ability to make transfers too because they have lost Chicharito for the rest of the season. While they have Dejan Joveljic as an able replacement, stocks are very low in the centre forward position should anything happen to him. 13 goals in 15 matches tells us that they have not been good all season. That is certainly not the case with St Louis City. There can often be little expectation on expansion teams but that wasn’t really the case with St Louis with it being a hotbed for football and with the amount of planning that has gone in since they were awarded an MLS franchise. That allowed them to hit the ground running and they are blazing a trail at the top of the West, and winning matches even without star striker Joao Klauss. They are 6-0-2 at home and scored 22 goals in those eight games so they are pretty rampant on home soil and with them tough to break down and very clinical at the other end of the pitch I expect St Louis to win and given that all six of their home wins have had at least three goals in them, I’m going to add some juice to the price and take St Louis to win and at least two goals in the game.

Portland Timbers vs FC Dallas (03.00)
The final match of the weekend comes from Providence Park where the Portland Timbers welcome Western Conference rivals FC Dallas with both teams looking to use the contest to make headway in the standings.
Portland haven’t really got going this season and have just one win in their last six matches coming into this game. Every now and again they put in a performance which makes you think that they are about to break out and show us the best version of themselves and then they go back to type which must be annoying for all involved. FC Dallas have no such issues. Should St Louis lose earlier in the day then Dallas could end the weekend on top of the Western Conference with a win here. The key to their success is one of the better keepers in the league on form and a striker who is ruthless. I think if you based a pick on this match on form then you would take FC Dallas but Providence Park is still a tough place to win at even with the Timbers not always at full pelt. This feels like an obvious match to leave alone.
