LV= County Championship 2023 – Sunday 3rd September Matches Tips and Betting Preview

We are into September which means that the red ball comes back out in county cricket for the concluding month of the LV= County Championship, with the competition resuming in both divisions on Sunday.

Seven matches begin in the two divisions on Sunday and with England getting the TV treatment if you have a bet on any of them and want to follow them then you’ll need to fire up the live stream provided by the home county in the match.

Division One

Surrey still hold the lead in Division One and you feel this is a big week for them when they welcome a dangerous Warwickshire side to The Oval. Warwickshire begin the week in fourth spot and know that only a win in London will keep any title aspirations they have alive. Hampshire are a place higher than Warwickshire in the table and the Metro Bank One Day Cup finalists will be looking to hold on to their own slim red ball title hopes when they host Somerset at the Ageas Bowl. The other match comes Wantage Road where things are getting serious for Northamptonshire. They host Lancashire knowing they really need to win to give their survival hopes a boost.

Division Two

This could be a huge week for Durham as they carry a 40 point lead into the resumption of Division Two with them and with the two teams immediately below them meeting each other, the Riverside based outfit will secure a return to the top flight if they come out on top in a home match against fourth placed Sussex. Those two teams behind Durham are Worcestershire and Glamorgan and if they think top spot has gone, which it probably has, then their match at New Road could very well decide who joins them in Division One next season. The other four teams are playing purely for pride from here on in with Yorkshire hosting Derbyshire at Scarborough and Leicestershire taking on Gloucestershire at Grace Road.

Betting

There isn’t a huge amount that I like over the course of the week, especially with it being the first week back after near enough six weeks off for the latter stages of the T20 Blast and The Hundred but I will take one bet. That comes in the form of Somerset to beat Hampshire. It makes no sense for Hampshire to produce a flat pitch here because a draw does nothing for them so if the wicket has a bit in it I think Somerset are decent value.

I say that because although traditionally this is the part of the season where Hampshire come alive in red ball cricket, they are not going to win the title and instead their minds could easily wander to the One Day Cup final in a couple of weeks, which is bigger than usual with it being the last chance to give outgoing chairman Rob Bransgrove some silverware to leave with. Hampshire haven’t batted well in red ball cricket all season and if Somerset can get into their batting early any enthusiasm the home side do have could quickly turn towards Trent Bridge later in the month. At the prices I think Somerset are worth a punt against the joint worst batting side in the top seven in terms of batting points this term.
