Wimbledon 2024 – Day 8 Tips and Betting Preview

The quarter final line up at Wimbledon will be finalised on Monday when the second half of fourth round matches are played out on the grass at SW19 as the penultimate Grand Slam of the season moves deeper into the second week.

We get to see whether the likes of Novak Djokovic, Elena Rybakina and Alexander Zverev can move into the quarter finals or if they are going to be the latest versions of a number of shocks in the tournament so far.

Centre Court

We begin with a women’s match on the Centre Court as a very good schedule gets up and running when the 2022 champion Elena Rybakina goes up against a dangerous challenger in the form of Anna Kalinskaya, who will be looking to follow her boyfriend Jannik Sinner into the last eight. When they are done it is the men all the way beginning with the French Open finalist Alexander Zverev who meets the Eastbourne champion Taylor Fritz in a tasty battle. The final match on the Centre Court on Monday sees Novak Djokovic looking to move towards another Wimbledon title when he faces the dangerous challenge of Holger Rune.

Court 1

The action over on Court 1 begins with the men on Monday as the Hertogenbosch winner Alex de Minaur looks to make it through to the Wimbledon quarter final for the first time when he goes up against Arthur Fils, the talented French player. The last two matches over on Court 1 are from the women’s draw and we get going with Yulia Putintseva looking to back up her excellent win over the number one seed Iga Swiatek in the previous round when she faces Jelena Ostapenko. The Court 1 schedule concludes with Danielle Collins looking to make the last eight in her final Wimbledon when she goes up against the former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova.

Court 2

That leaves Court 2 to host the other two singles matches on Monday where the four players will once again be hoping that the weather plays ball so that it doesn’t mess up their schedule for what they hope will be a huge week. Lorenzo Musetti opens up the show when he goes up against the big serving unseeded French player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The women follow them onto the court when Elina Svitolina looks to go to within a win of emulating her run to the semi-final here a year ago when she faces Xinyu Wang.

Betting

I’ll go with three bets over the course of the day with the first of them coming in the form of a first set tiebreak in the opening match over on Court 2 between Lorenzo Musetti and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The Frenchman has a booming serve and that has already seen him involved in five tiebreaks in the 12 sets he has played in the main draw, after playing three more in his final qualifying round which he actually lost before being allowed back into the draw as a lucky loser. Musetti has played four tiebreaks in this tournament himself and although none of them have been in the opening set, these two met on grass in Stuttgart a few weeks ago and both sets went to a tiebreak. I’m expecting breaks of serve at a premium here and while I wouldn’t put anyone off taking the larger prices on a bigger number of tiebreaks in the match, I’m happy to take the 6/5 that there is one in the first set.

Staying on that same court I am expecting Elina Svitolina to be too good for Xinyu Wang. Wang has had a decent run here and her win over Jessica Pegula merits respect but she lost the first set pretty comfortably to Harriet Dart in the previous round and was a break down in each of the next two before turning them around, with a bit of assistance from Dart it has to be said. I don’t expect Svitolina to be as generous here. She goes into this match off the back of dismantling a top level player in Ons Jabeur and she is looking like the player who got to the semi-final here last year. Wang has been taking the distance in all three matches this week so there is a lot of tennis in her legs. Svitolina is getting better and I’m surprised she is only being asked to give up 2.5 games here. I think the Ukrainian wins a little easier than that.

Lastly we return to the first set tiebreak market in the match between Taylor Fritz and Alexander Zverev on the Centre Court. Heading into the last 16 matches these two sat second and third in the tournament on first serve points won and that in itself tells us that service breaks are going to be hard to come by, especially with both players serving so well. Both men are getting better on serve as well. Fritz put 72% of first serves in against Alejandro Tabilo in the third round but Zverev had that covered in his previous round win over Cameron Norrie where 76% of the serves he put in were good. If they get anywhere near those numbers then service breaks are going to be at a premium and might not come until deeper in the contest. These two met here three years ago when the opening set went the distance. I expect history to repeat itself here.
