Paris 2024 Olympics – Other Sports Tuesday 6th August Tips and Betting Preview

We continue to head towards the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics with another day of other sports action on Tuesday as 15 more gold medals will be earned by the athletes competing in the French capital.

Once again it is a day where the stars come out to shine in a wide number of sports and with markets priced up for pretty much all of the sports and the events within them there is a lot to get stuck into on Tuesday.

Gold Medal Events

  • Athletics
  • Boxing

Other Sports

It is also a day where the women’s semi-finals take place in the football competition with all eyes on the world champions Spain to see if they can set up a gold medal clash potentially with Emma Hayes and her USA team. Elsewhere, the beach volleyball quarter finals begin as do the basketball last eight clashes while the men’s hockey semi-finals take place as well. There is also more action in sports such as boxing, volleyball, handball, water polo while the canoeing moves to the flatter waters to get the sprints underway.

Football

The two women’s semi-finals take place over the course of Tuesday and it is the first game which interests us from a betting point of view. That is the one which sees the USA going up against Germany for the second time in the tournament after Emma Hayes’ charges beat the Germans 4-1 in the group stage. You would imagine that the stage of the competition will make this one a little tighter than that but there was a clear gulf between these two sides in that meeting.

I’m a little surprised that you can get almost even money on the Americans to win this. That might be because they were taken to extra time by Japan in the previous round but Germany had to come through a penalty shootout against a Canada side who were troubled throughout the event with the off field issues. With the likes of Trinity Rodman finding her touch now I expect USA to find a way through this German defence inside the 90 minutes and when you consider that USA have only conceded two goals in their last eight matches, that one goal could be enough.

Athletics

It is another big day on the track and in the field on Tuesday with the headline final being the Men’s 1500m which has all the makings of a real highlight of this Olympic Games. That is one of five gold medals which will be won over the course of the day with the Women’s 200m final also taking place as well as the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase while in the field the Women’s Hammer Throw and Men’s Long Jump finals will take place.

The Women’s 200m looks to be an American medal fest even though we hope the two Britons will get among it but it is the Men’s 1500m which has our attention where one of the marquee matchups of these games will play out. That is the one between the world champion Josh Kerr and the defending Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen and as expected the bookmakers have it between the two with the third favourite a distant 25/1 in the betting. The Norwegian is the favourite for gold but he has looked a little edgy to me this week. I don’t know whether it is the relentless chat that Kerr has been doing has got into the head of his rival or he just isn’t quite at 100% but Kerr has looked like a man on a mission all week. I suspect the odds have Ingebrigtsen favourite as Kerr hasn’t run a 1500m this year heading into the meeting but there’s nothing wrong with the Briton and 27/20 he has to be the bet here.

Basketball

The men’s quarter finals will take place over the course of the entire day on Tuesday with eyes likely to be on the host nation France to see if they can make it through to the semi-final but really this competition looks to be all about the Dream Team of USA who have cruised into the last eight and who are expected to crack on and claim the gold later in the week. To guarantee a shot at a medal they have to get the better of Brazil in the last of the quarter finals.

I don’t think this one will be so much a case of whether the USA get the better of Brazil but more a case of how many will they overcome the South Americans by. Brazil came through as the best third placed side in the preliminary stage but they were a little fortunate that Japan had a mare of a final quarter in their last game as the two sides were level after three quarters and Japan really aren’t much of a side. USA clearly are and are yet to score less than 100 points in a match in this competition. They have posted totals of 110, 103 and 104 so with a 26.5 point handicap to cover here if they are in that range again Brazil are going to need to get upwards towards 80 points. They only posted 66 against France and 73 against Germany and those sorts of numbers aren’t going to get close to this elite USA side.
