Athletics

It is the final day of athletics inside the Stade de France at these Olympics on Saturday with no fewer than six finals on the track and a couple in the field as well as the Men’s Marathon at the beginning of the day. Two of the finals are the relays while we also have the Men’s 800m, Women’s 100m Hurdles, Men’s 5000m and the Women’s 1500m with the Men’s High Jump and Women’s Javelin the two finals that will take place in the field.

I like a couple of value bets over the course of the day with the first coming in the form of the defending champion Gianmarco Tamberi in the Men’s High Jump. He has had an eventful week having started it in hospital with an apparent kidney stone but he made it on the start line for qualifying and qualified for the final and with one of his chief rivals, Mutaz Barshim, struggling with some sort of cramp during qualifying and Hamish Kerr having to deliver on the major stage for the first time I think the Italian could have had the cards fall his way in a final which is going to be competitive and potentially the highlight of the athletics programme.

The other bet that I like comes in the form of the Women’s 1500m where we have an emphatic favourite in the Faith Kipyegon, who has already run the 5000m this week and while I don’t think she’ll be beaten here it might not be the surprise it may have been if she is as a result of her exertions. Two Brits are in this final. Laura Muir will get all the attention but the other Briton, Georgia Bell, has caught my attention this year. She finished fourth in the World Indoors in Glasgow at the start of the year and has impressed outdoors at 800 and 1500 this term. She has put a 3.56 on the clock over 1500 this year and if this turns into a tactical race that could easily be good enough for her to win a medal. The other way she could win a medal is those who are here for gold take on Kipyegon but kill themselves in the process of trying to beat her as we saw in the men’s event. A medal of any colour would be incredible for Bell so she could be the one picking off beaten opponents late on. At 5/1 I’ll pay to see if she has a medal in her.
