Super League XXIX – Friday 23rd August Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

Another round of matches in the Super League XXIX season begins on Friday evening when two games take place over the course of the night as three of the four teams on show continue to battle for positions down the line.

As has been the case throughout the season so far, both of these matches are live on TV for us to enjoy so if you have a couple of devices there is plenty of reason to sit back and watch two important games of Super League.

Castleford Tigers vs Warrington Wolves (20.00 – Sky Sports+)

Two teams at opposite ends of the Super League table meet at The Jungle on Friday night when the Castleford Tigers continue to play out the remainder of their season as they host a Warrington Wolves side who have their eyes on big prices between now and October.

Warrington have the chance to move into the top two in the table for a day or two at least with a win here and they are warm favourites to pick it up. That is understandable after a really good Magic Weekend win over the Leeds Rhinos, one which showed that they can perform on the big stage even though they weren’t as fluent as they might have wanted. One issue for the Wolves here though is that full-back Matt Dufty picked up an injury in that match and he’ll miss this one. Castleford were beaten by the Huddersfield Giants at Elland Road in a match where they were 18-0 down at one point. To their credit, they got it back to 18-12 but were comfortably held at bay and you get the feeling that with four losses on the spin, while they haven’t downed tools completely, their attention is more on next season than this one. Warrington are anything but that and this is the sort of game that if someone like George Williams can sparkle they could do some real damage. The other thing to note for this one is that Warrington have had an extra 24 hours to recover, which feels significant at this stage of the season. The Wolves are only being asked to cover 14 points in this one and I feel they have that in them. This feels like a bad time for Cas to run into Warrington so while I’m not always sold on betting away teams at big handicaps, given that point difference could very well come into the deciding of the top three spots, I’m comfortable with Warrington winning and winning well here.

Leeds Rhinos vs Catalans Dragons (20.00 – Sky Sports+)

The other match on Friday night comes from Headingley where the race for the top six is very much in the spotlight as Leeds Rhinos look to give their chances of breaking into the playoff zone a boost when they host the Catalans Dragons.

Leeds are on the outside looking in and defeat at Magic Weekend last week has left them four points off the top six with five games to play but one of those sides who are four ahead of them are the opponents for this match so the Rhinos have the chance to really strengthen their playoff hopes with a win here. Defeat would really leave their chances of extending their season hanging by a thread. At the same time, a Catalans win in this one won’t completely secure their spot in the postseason but it would really put the pressure on the Leigh Leopards, who you feel would be the only team left who could deny the French outfit another playoff campaign. I have to say I think the odds are about right here. There might be an ounce of value on the +10 for the Dragons but both of these teams are picking up an injury or two too many for my liking. I don’t really like Leeds to cover because this is all about winning for them. This feels like one to just watch and see what it does to the table ahead of the final month of the season rather than bet on.
