The first week of the US Open concludes as far as the singles draws are concerned as the third round of the tournament finishes off on the show courts at Flushing Meadows on what many are calling Super Saturday in New York.
The tournament is still reeling from the shock loss of Novak Djokovic on Friday night and those who are involved on Saturday will be keen to avoid being victim of the latest upset and that includes the two world number ones.
Arthur Ashe Stadium
We get underway with the Toronto champion Jessica Pegula who will be looking to make the second week of her home Grand Slam when she goes up against the Spanish unseeded player Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. When they are done the day session concludes with the men’s number one seed Jannik Sinner looking to make it into the last 16 when he goes up against the Australian player Christopher O’Connell. The other world number one, Iga Swiatek, has the honour of opening up the night session when she faces the dangerous Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova before the main court action concludes with Daniil Medvedev meeting Flavio Cobolli.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
We have a really good schedule to look forward to on the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Saturday and it gets underway with the woman who is looking to make it through to a third Grand Slam final on the year as Jasmine Paolini takes on Yulia Putintseva before the other half of the Olympic doubles gold medallist pair takes to the court when Sara Errani faces Diana Shnaider. The day session concludes with a men’s match which will see Tommy Paul going up against Gabriel Diallo. The night session on Armstrong might turn out to be better than the one on Ashe and it begins with Alex de Minaur meeting Dan Evans before Beatriz Haddad Maia faces Anna Kalinskaya.
Grandstand
Another four singles matches take place out on the Grandstand court and they get underway with Karolina Muchova looking to back up her win over Naomi Osaka in the previous round when she meets Anastasia Potapova. When they are done the man who took out Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round is back on court when Botic van de Zandschulp meets the British number one Jack Draper in what should be a good match. Caroline Wozniacki follows them onto the stage and she meets Jessika Ponchet before the men’s match between Matteo Arnaldi and Jordan Thompson concludes the schedule.

Court 17
The last three matches take place over on Court 17 as far as the singles is concerned and we get underway with two competent unseeded men’s players as David Goffin takes on Tomas Machac before a doubles match just brings a bit of a delay to the singles proceedings. When it resumes Liudmila Samsonova will look to make the second week of this Grand Slam when she faces the outsider Ashlyn Krueger. The final match on this court sees Nuno Borges meeting Jakub Mensik in a match which presents both men with a huge chance to make the second week of the US Open for the first time.
Betting
There isn’t a huge amount that I like on Saturday I have to say. For some reason I haven’t really had much of a vibe over this half of the draw yet this week and I’m not getting a great feeling on Saturday but there is one bet which I do like the look of and that comes in the form of Matteo Arnaldi to beat Jordan Thompson. Thompson had a really good win over Hubert Hurkacz in the previous round and he merits respect because just quietly he is having a pretty decent year.
I just feel that there is a bit more to the Arnaldi game and his run in Canada is the other thing that leads me towards him. Arnaldi reached the semi-final of that tournament and he has made it to this stage without dropping a set and is looking like he is joining the charge of Italian players on the top end of the ATP Tour these days. Arnaldi has a winning record on hard courts in the last couple of years so the surface isn’t an issue. I like Thompson but I think there is more progression and slightly more upside in the younger man’s game and so I’ll take the Italian here.
