The closing match of the triple header of action in the NFL 2024 Playoffs on Sunday comes from Florida where the number three seeds Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the number six seeds Washington Commanders in the NFC.
The Buccaneers were the last division winners of the season in the NFC and they managed to snatch the three seed as a result. Washington have won more matches though and will be looking for an away win in this match.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had a creditable season without it being anything too special but they were good enough to win the NFC South title. That went down to the last week of the season where it looked like at one stage that they were making a mess of things against the New Orleans Saints but sorted things out when it mattered and got the win that they needed. The pressure of playing a do or die match should serve them well in this contest.
The Buccaneers powered home this season with six wins in their last seven matches. Their defence was found wanting at times by a limited New Orleans Saints offense last week which would be an obvious concern but their offense is beginning to really power up and that will serve them well in this match even if they haven’t got the tools to go deep in the postseason. This is likely to be the last time they will be at home this season so they will be keen to make the most of that.

Washington Commanders
I think it is fair to say that the Washington Commanders were the surprise package of the regular season. With a rookie quarterback coming off the back of a very lean spell it was the recipe for a season of struggle but instead they have cruised into the playoffs and there was a time for a while where they looked like they might win the NFC East and host a match in the playoffs as a result of that. That never materialised but it is a decent achievement just being here.
Washington come into this match flying having won their last five matches and in those games they have put up 30 points or more in three of them so they are starting to find a groove on offense again and they have a passing game which can do damage to most teams. Defensively I think it is fair to say that they can be hit or miss and they can’t really afford to be miss here because they are up against a pretty powerful offense on the other side.
Betting
I was tempted to take the Washington Commanders as the outsiders because the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a pigs ear of things last week but got out of trouble but I’m not so sure it would be as easy to get away with it against the Commanders, however having got away with it last week it might be that they free up and play really well here. With that in mind, I’ll take it to be a bit of a shootout which this one could easily turn into and go with the points.
The line is 50.5 which feels a little on the low side when you consider that the pair met earlier in the season when Tampa Bay came out on top 37-20. That was Jayden Daniels’ first game in the NFL though and it is clear that he has improved markedly since then and the Washington offense has followed suit. Both of these teams have powerful passing games and both defences are weak in the secondary so this feels like it has a strong chance of turning into a shootout.
