The Sydney Thunder will look to secure their spot in the finals of the Big Bash League on Monday when they welcome the Perth Scorchers to the Sydney Showground for what is a massive match in the season so far.
A win gets the Thunder into the finals with a match to spare but a defeat could see them needing to beat their rivals Sydney Sixers to get in. Perth will move into the top four with a win here so the stakes are huge on this one.
Sydney Thunder
The Sydney Thunder are enjoying a much better season than they had last term. It was one which was going even better when they had won four of their first six matches with another of them washed out but they have lost their last two matches. We shouldn’t really be that harsh on them because their team has been hit hard by the absence of the two players who were involved in that collision last week and they haven’t really been able to balance the side out since then.
The other issue that the Thunder have had is that their batting hasn’t quite caught fire as one unit for a while. To be fair to them, two of the three defeats that they have suffered were to the Sydney Sixers and the Hobart Hurricanes and they are the top two in the competition. Even so, the Thunder will want to bat better here. In the main, apart from one partnership against the Brisbane Heat the bowling has improved for the Thunder but the batting needs to come alive now too.
Perth Scorchers
This is certainly not a position we are used to seeing the Perth Scorchers in this deep into a season. They go into the match in sixth spot and probably need to win both of their remaining matches if they are going to make it into the top four. It is almost unheard of for the Scorchers not to be in the finals so we could see some history were they to lose this match. Perth have lost their last three matches and that is a trend which they have to end here else their season is most likely done.
The Scorchers have failed with the ball in two of those three matches and that is certainly something we are not accustomed to seeing. They are usually the most reliable bowling unit in the competition and although they have lost Jhye Richardson at times we still expect more from them. He is going to miss the remainder of the season which isn’t exactly ideal so the Scorchers are going to need someone else to stand up and be counted.

Key Players
David Warner is now the leading run scorer in the competition after another big innings in the last match. The Thunder will be looking at their captain to post a big score again and hope that more players bat around him.
Jason Behrendorff is closing in on the most wickets in the season and without Jhye Ruchardson around the Perth Scorchers could do with the reliable left armer to come good and break up the aggressive Sydney opening partnership.
Betting
I think the sixes line could be a little high in this match. The line is up at 10.5 but Sydney Thunder didn’t hit a single six in their last match against the Hobart Hurricanes and while I wouldn’t expect a repeat of that here, there is no guarantee that they plunder many against this bowling unit, especially if Dave Warner goes big as he seems to be more content running twos than hitting sixes in recent innings. With Sherfane Rutherford having left the Thunder are devoid of big hitters.
Perth Scorchers aren’t exactly full of big hitters themselves and if Finn Allen is out cheaply it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if they don’t crack many sixes here. I think there is enough in both bowling units to ride those rather than expect the batters to do something they don’t always do. When you add in the competitiveness of this one it wouldn’t be a surprise if one of the batting units fluff their lines and if they do then the sixes under could have some joy here.
