The last round of regular season Super League matches continue on Friday night with the big Wigan vs St Helens derby and another match at Salford which sees the league leaders Hull FC in action on what is a huge night of action for three of the four teams.
As you would expect the Wigan vs Saints derby is the televised game but with Hull FC looking to remain top of the table I’m sure there will be plenty of updates on the other match.
Wigan Warriors vs St Helens
These two sides go into the derby off the back of different results last week. Wigan were beaten at Leeds while St Helens had a good win over Huddersfield. Wigan played a couple of days before St Helens which might end up being significant.
That defeat ended a good run of wins for Wigan and if there is one thing their coach Shaun Wane hates it is losing so I’m expecting Wigan to be extra fired up this week, not that they need any more motivation than to beat their rivals. Sam Tomkins, John Bateman and Sean O’Loughlin return for the Warriors here and that is important.
St Helens kept their recent good run up with a solid win at Huddersfield to move level on points with fourth placed Catalans so the dream of making it to Old Trafford again is still very much alive for St Helens. They will hope their momentum serves them well here but they will need to be at their very best to come through.
I fancy Wigan will get back to winning ways here but rarely do these matches get won by a big margin so rather than chance them to cover a converted try I’m going to take them to win by 1-12pts. Saints are attacking well enough and defending solidly and that can be enough to keep them close but I fancy Wigan Warriors will just about get over the line.
Salford Red Devils vs Hull FC
Salford know their fate when it comes to being in the Middle 8s for the rest of the Super League season whereas Hull have their eyes on much bigger things. They are top of the table and genuine contenders for the league leaders’ shield and they will be looking for a return to Old Trafford having been away for so long.
Salford’s win at Widnes last week deserves to be respected especially as Widnes can back at them a number of times and the Red Devils were determined not to be denied but they miss Justin Carney here and that can never be described as ideal. Still they have been spirited all season and can give a good account of themselves.
Hull FC are on the front foot again after their win in the derby last week and with Frank Pritchard returning to further power them up the middle we can expect the leaders to leave nothing behind as they chase another win to keep them at the summit.
Salford have covered every handicap at home this season and that has to be respected while Hull FC don’t always win by as many as they should so this will be an interesting match but when all is said and done I expect the Black and Whites to have enough to win this but not by a significant margin. I’ll take Hull FC by 1-12 as well.
