The quarter finals of the ATP Miami Open get underway at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida on Wednesday on a day where we have a bonus match after the rain curtailed the Tuesday schedule and left it incomplete.
That means we have three matches on the day rather than the two we were scheduled to have with an extra game from the round of 16 being played before the two quarter finals in the bottom half of the draw take place.
Day Session
Alexander Zverev vs Arthur Fils
The one match from the last 16 to take place is the one involving the number one seed Alexander Zverev and the rising French star Arthur Fils who will battle it out for a shot at Jakub Mensik in the quarter final on Thursday.
Zverev has come through the draw in fairly solid fashion this week and had this match taken place on the day it was meant to on Tuesday then he would have been expected to come through with plenty to spare because Fils had to go to breakneck point to get the better of Frances Tiafoe in a physically demanding match on Monday. The Frenchman was cramping up at the end of that match and would have been a sitting duck had this one taken place on Tuesday. The fact he has had an extra 24 hours to recover and in theory be much fresher for this encounter gives him more of a chance but it is still hard to go against the top seed here. I no longer want to be on Zverev to win big though so this final match of the last 16 is a pretty easy one to leave alone.
Francisco Cerundolo vs Grigor Dimitrov
The first of the quarter finals in the Miami Open sees two men who have been beyond this stage of the tournament in the past battling it out when Francisco Cerundolo takes on the beaten finalist of a year ago in Grigor Dimitrov.
Miami has come at a good time for Dimitrov. He hasn’t had the best start to the year because of injuries but he has looked fit this week and has come through the draw nicely. He has only dropped one set in his three matches and generally has looked in good order. That is one more set than Cerundolo has dropped though and in Tommy Paul and Casper Ruud you would have to say that the Argentine has had the trickier draw to negotiate. While Dimitrov has cruised through to this stage, Brandon Nakashima largely beat himself on Tuesday and I wonder if the Bulgarian is flattered a little on that evidence. Paul wasn’t playing his best when Cerundolo beat him but the Argentine took care of Ruud fair and square and he just looks in the slightly better order with his game. Cerundolo has won for me twice this week and at odds against I think he is worth a bet to complete the hat trick against a maybe slightly underdone Dimitrov.

Night Session
Seb Korda vs Novak Djokovic
There is one men’s quarter final in the night session on Wednesday and it sees the legend Novak Djokovic looking to make it back to a Masters 1000 semi-final when he goes up against one of the two American players left in the draw in Seb Korda.
Korda has enjoyed the quicker conditions in Miami this week and that assistance could give him a sniff against Djokovic but it has to be said that the Serb has looked back to his best at times in this competition and would look to be a tricky opponent to shift from here on in. Korda has the power to take the racquet out of the hands of anyone but the big question is whether he will have the consistency to win two sets against the elite defence of Djokovic. I think it is fair to doubt that but this will be just about winning and progressing for Djokovic who is surely the favourite to win the title now given how the draw has opened up so I don’t really want to get involved on any handicaps or game lines or anything like that. I’ll sit the night game out.
