Almost a week after Australia secured success in the ODI series, the Australians and South Africa meet in a one-off T20 international at the Gold Coast. This match could be forgotten with the Indians arriving soon but given the area it is being played in it should be decent enough in its own right.
With no World T20 on the horizon or anything like that it remains to be seen how seriously this match will be taken by both teams given that they both have plenty more cricket on the horizon.
Australia
The last time we saw Australia in this format they were getting mullered by Pakistan in the UAE and they will be out to prove that they are better than they showed there. What they need to show more than anything else is that they can read game situations better and manage them accordingly. That is something they failed miserably at in the UAE.
We know Australia have the power in their batting and also the mixture, variety and most of all quality with the ball so there is no reason why Australia shouldn’t be a really good side in this format, especially in their own conditions which they are in here. You get the feeling they are going to go all-out to impress here.
South Africa
We are at that stage of a tour where I wonder what interest the touring side has retained in proceedings. South Africa’s T20 league has just begun so it would be completely understandable if the minds of the players were getting home to compete in that rather than on a solo match which has absolutely no significance to anything other than promoting cricket in the area.
South Africa look a little weak with the bat in this format of the game so they are going to need their bowling attack to stand up and be counted if they are to leave Australia with a victory. They have the personnel in their attack to deliver the goods but ultimately in Australia you have to score runs and I question whether the Proteas have enough in them.
Team News
Australia have chosen to rest Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood among others for the upcoming matches against India which means that Nathan Coulter-Nile and Billy Stanlake will spearhead the attack.
South Africa are without JP Duminy for this match so David Miller could move up the order to compensate for that. Dale Steyn is set to feature with the ball even though this match doesn’t mean a great deal.

Betting
If you backed Australia in the UAE you barely got a run for your money but things should be much better for the Australians in these conditions and as such I think they have to be the bet in this game. The match doesn’t mean a great deal overall but usually in that situation the home team will find more in them to be motivated about.
When you look at the two line ups man for man there is no doubt that Australia carry the better of it. That doesn’t necessarily mean it will equate to an Australia win but they just look like they have more match winners in their side. That generally equates to the winning side so I’m with the home side here.
