Australian Open Tennis 2025 – Day 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The second day of action at the Australian Open will be a busy one as the tournament bids to make up for the rain of the opening day. Monday is the first day where there is a full schedule on all of the courts across Melbourne Park.

We saw the main contenders who were on show make it through to the second round and plenty more title challengers will be taking to the court on Monday looking to follow them through to the next stage of the first Grand Slam of the year.

Rod Laver Arena

The day session on Rod Laver Arena is as tasty as it gets at this stage of a Grand Slam with Coco Gauff opening up the show for her clash with the former champion Sofia Kenin in what could be a huge test for the higher ranked player. When they are done Jannik Sinner begins the defence of his title when he takes on the dangerous Nicolas Jarry. The men open up the night session as well with Novak Djokovic starting his latest Grand Slam when he goes up against the wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy. We conclude with another former winner in Naomi Osaka closing the show when she meets Caroline Garcia for a second year in a row.

Margaret Court Arena

There are four matches over on the Margaret Court Arena on Monday as well and it begins with the home wildcard Ajla Tomjlanovic going up against Ashlyn Krueger. Another home player will be on show on this court after them when Jordan Thompson meets the qualifier Dominik Koepfer. The night session starts with the exciting Carlos Alcaraz taking on Alexander Shevchenko before we conclude with a match between Danielle Collins, who has a good record here, one which she will hope to extend when she meets Daria Snigur.

John Cain Arena

Four matches take place over on the John Cain Arena as well on Monday and we start with a good looking match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex Michelsen in what could be a lengthy contest. The number two seed Iga Swiatek gets her quest underway for a first Australian Open title in the second match of the day on this court. Doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova will be her opponent. Jessica Pegula opens up the night session. She was only competing in the final in Adelaide on Saturday night so it is a quick turnaround for her match against the home wildcard Maya Joint before the action concludes with the Grand Slam return of Nick Kyrgios. He meets the British player Jacob Fearnley.

Kia Arena

We start out with the impressive Diana Shnaider over on the Kia Arena on Monday. She will face off against Elisabetta Cocciaretto before the former winner Victoria Azarenka faces Lucia Bronzetti. When they are done the home hopeful Thanasi Kokkinakis goes up against Roman Safiullin. The final match on this court sees one of our outright picks on Tommy Paul looking to make it into the second round when he faces the second home player on this court on Monday in the form of Christopher O’Connell.

Best of the Rest

We have plenty of seeded players dotted around the grounds on Monday for those who have a ground pass or access to all of the streams to enjoy. Many of them are involved in competitive matches too which isn’t always the case in the first round of a Grand Slam. Among those seeds are Frances Tiafoe, Jelena Ostapenko, Jack Draper, Marta Kostyuk, Grigor Dimitrov, Alejandro Tabilo, Liudmila Samsonova, Elina Svitolina, Sebastian Baez, Karolina Muchova, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Sebastian Korda.

Betting

There isn’t a huge amount that I like in the men’s game on Monday although I do have a bet outstanding in the form of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina who should have played on Sunday but the rain put paid to that. I will take one on Monday though and it comes in the match between Jan-Lennard Struff and Felix Auger-Aliassime. You rarely get a comfortable win in a Grand Slam for the Canadian and the German has a big serve and enough of a game to take this to a fourth set and maybe beyond. There could easily be a comedown for FAA after winning the title in Adelaide over the weekend where he played a lot of tennis so this could easily turn into a battle. With that in mind, I like over 39.5 games in this one.

There isn’t a lot more that I like in the women’s game either. In fact, there is just one bet for me which comes in the form of Elise Mertens to cover a 3.5 game handicap against Viktorija Golubic. Golubic did well to come through qualifying for this tournament but she was seeded to do that so we shouldn’t be surprised and the draw opened up a touch for her. Mertens is clearly in good touch having made the final in Hobart last week and she has an excellent record in the opening round of a Grand Slam. I think she extends that against a player who has fallen down the rankings for a reason.

Tips

Back J-L.Struff vs F.Auger-Aliassime – Over 39.5 games for a 3/10 stake at 1.83 with Boylesports
