We’ve reached the last day of the ATP World Tour season and we have two excellent finals to enjoy on the final day of action at the o2 Arena in London on Sunday.
Over the course of five or so hours on Sunday afternoon we will see the Barclays ATP World Tour singles and doubles titles decided beginning with an interesting looking doubles match before a mouth-watering singles final.
The newly crowned world number one doubles side Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Roger have been almost flawless in this tournament so far and they’ll be hoping they have saved one performance for this final.
They take on the surprise package of the event in Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea. Surprises or not Bopanna and Mergea have already taken care of the Bryans, Murray and Peers and Dodig and Melo this week so it would be foolish to write them off.
I’m not writing them off but I do fancy the French-Romanian pair to win this and back up their Wimbledon title with another London success. I’ve been so impressed with them this week. They have served well but returned brilliantly and based on this week they are rightly the number one side in the rankings.
Bopanna and Mergea won’t go down without a fight but I fancy the quality to come through here and I’m backing Tecau and Rojer to get this done in straight sets.
What a singles final we are in for as probably the two best players in the game right now meet on a huge stage for a very lucrative title when Novak Djokovic plays Roger Federer for the second time this week.
Federer has already beaten Djokovic this week which will give him oodles of confidence to take into the final. If he needed any more then the way he dispatched Stan Wawrinka in the semi-final will have only further boosted his mojo right now.
Novak Djokovic wasn’t at his best in the group stage match. He wasn’t his best in all three matches in the round robin group but he looked a lot better against Nadal in the semi-final and he will be hoping he’s saved his best for last.
There might be a bit of needle around this final. Djokovic claimed he handed Federer their match earlier in the week which has been portrayed as the Serb writing off Federer’s good play in the match which I’m not so sure he did if I’m honest.
The two men were expected to meet at this stage 12 months ago but an injury to Federer meant it never happened but they will face off this time I think and I fancy it to go the distance when they do.
Federer is playing with good variety this week while Djokovic found some aggression on Saturday so we’re set up for a classic contest between these two and one which can go safely over 22.5 games before it concludes.
