The top of the table is back in the spotlight in the two Premier League matches on Sunday as both Arsenal and Leicester are in action on another high profile day in the division.
Sunderland vs Arsenal
The day begins with an important match for both sides as Sunderland host Arsenal in the earlier kick off. Sunderland know that they will escape the drop zone for the first time in a while if they avoid defeat here and there can be no bigger incentive than that. Arsenal saw Man City move above them into third on Saturday and a win here will push the Gunners back into that spot.
Sunderland have got a nice little run together at the right time. You wouldn’t say they are powering out of the relegation zone but they have only lost one of their last six and four draws in that time show how they have suddenly become hard to beat. The defeat was against the leaders Leicester so they’ve nothing to be ashamed of there.
There is plenty of doom and gloom around Arsenal at the minute and I guess that is a sign of the frustration that they are not challenging for the title again but they are undefeated in six matches and ignoring everything else that form isn’t too bad. That said you do still question their heart and commitment when things get tough.
In truth I can’t really find a way in here. I want to take Arsenal on but there is something in the back of my mind telling me it isn’t a good move. If Sunderland get a result then so be it but I’ll keep myself away from this one.
Leicester vs Swansea
We’ve reached crunch time for Leicester now and once again with Spurs not playing until Monday night they have the chance to steal some ground on their title rivals. They had that opportunity last Sunday but failed to capitalise but they are still odds on to win this game.
Of course Leicester are without Jamie Vardy for this one after his dismissal last week and that is going to be a big loss whichever way Claudio Ranieri wants to dress it up. Leo Ulloa is a competent striker at this level but he’s no Vardy.
Swansea are on the beach already. That much is pretty apparent and to be fair given the problems and battles they’ve had this season who can blame them now they are safe and having nothing to play for. That said sides tend to raise it when they play the leaders so I fancy some sort of performance from Swansea here.
This has the makings of being a nervy, edgy afternoon for the title chasers. Swansea can keep things tight and they do carry a threat on the counter but Leicester are too smart to be done by a counter attack you would think so this could well be all about whether the home side can breach the Swansea defence.
That won’t be easy without Vardy because his ability to stretch defences and provide space for Riyad Mahrez to do his thing in is a massive feature of Leicester’s play. I fancy Leicester to edge this but given that I don’t see them being free scoring without Vardy and the fact they rarely concede I think under 2.5 goals is the way to go here against a Swansea side who can be solid and can keep things tight.
