The final two matches in the latest round of Premier League games take place on the first Super Sunday of 2016 with two of the top five going into the current round of fixtures in action.
Sunday’s football begins in London where Crystal Palace host Chelsea in a London derby. At the start of the season if you had said there would be nine places between the two sides you would be forgiven for thinking Chelsea were top and Palace in mid-table but it is Palace who are pushing for a European place and this could be a barometer of their chances.
Chelsea’s first half of the season has been well documented. It was awful but there have been signs since Guus Hiddink took the reins that they are turning the corner and they are yet to lose under the veteran Dutchman. This could be the toughest test to that record though.
Usually I’d be looking at Palace to cause Chelsea all sorts of problems but injuries are mounting up and now Yohan Cabaye is suspended so this is starting to have a big impact particularly on their attacking play. Defensively they are strong though so maybe they will set their stall out not to lose and try and nick something from set pieces.
Chelsea don’t look particularly fluent on the road when it comes to attacking quality although having Diego Costa back after he missed Monday’s stalemate at Old Trafford should help them. I think this will be low scoring but the odds and lines look about right.
After that match we head to Goodison Park which has been a ground full of entertainment in recent times although not much success for the home side. The last two matches here have seen Everton lose 3-2 to Leicester and 4-3 to Stoke so their fans will be desperate for success when they take on Tottenham.
Tottenham head to Merseyside having won their last three matches and some of their attacking play involving the young English talent in their side is often a joy to watch. We know Everton are struggling defensively so Spurs should be looking at this for a chance to impose themselves on the home side and pick up another win.
Everton are not lacking for goals and with the likes of Lukaku, Barkley, Kone and Deulofeu in their ranks they’re unlikely to struggling in that department any time soon so I’m expecting both sides to have a bit of a go here and I fully expect to see at least three goals and potentially plenty more on top of that if this one catches fire early on.
