The second half of the Big Bash League double header on Saturday comes from the Gold Coast as the Brisbane Heat take one of their home matches away from The Gabba. They play host to the Hobart Hurricanes, who get their season underway in this contest.
Hobart were the beaten finalists last season and will be out to go one step better here when they take on a Heat outfit who have already been beaten and might be under a little bit of pressure to avoid going 0-2 for the campaign.
Brisbane Heat
I don’t think the Brisbane Heat will need to delve too deep to find out what went wrong for them in their opening match. They did not get going with the bat and as such despite the controversy around the game, they were never truly in the hunt even though they kept taking wickets when it came to defending that low total.
It goes without saying that they are going to need to bat better in this match but they certainly have that in them. What they can’t do is go out all guns blazing and bat like lunatics. They still need to respect the format and build a platform for their bigger hitters to come to take advantage of. Whether that will happen remains to be seen.
Hobart Hurricanes
I would have imagined there will be the better part of 11 months of build-up frustration ready to come out for the Hobart Hurricanes in this match. They will want to put the defeat of the final last season behind them and there will be no better way for them to do that than to get up and running straight away this term.
I think the Hurricanes look nicely balanced and what I like about them is they had a double header against Auckland earlier in the week, two matches which they won both of, so they will go into this tournament warmed up and ready to strike straight away. We saw in those matches that they have plenty of danger with the bat and a tidy bowling attack too.
Team News
Brisbane Heat will be without their strike bowler James Pattinson for this match as he is the best man at someone’s wedding. Matt Kuhnemann comes into the squad and it could be that he goes straight into the side too.
Hobart Hurricanes will be missing Tim Paine for their opening match as he is away with Australia but Jofra Archer and Tymal Mills are both around. James Faulkner is set to make his debut with Matthew Wade expected to open.

Betting
If this match was on a normal sized ground then I would be all over the Hobart Hurricanes here but it isn’t so I have to temper my enthusiasm for them somewhat and appreciate that we can’t really bet on the outcome of the match until we know the result of the silly bat flip as I sense this ground is going to be very difficult to defend.
With that in mind, the obvious bet is to take over 13.5 sixes. This stadium is an AFL stadium so there are going to be plenty of short boundaries on it and as long as the pitch isn’t too tacky, and with the number of games here this season it shouldn’t be, then I expect two big hitting, heavy scoring teams to keep the sixes flowing here. Generally these two combine for run fests. I expect no different here.
