We have effectively the first Big Bash League dead rubber of the season on Friday when the Brisbane Heat play host to the Perth Scorchers at The Gabba with bottom spot in the table and the wooden spoon effectively on the line.
There is a crazy mathematical equation that allows Brisbane Heat to win their last three and still make it into the knockout stages but that is so unlikely it is barely worth considering. Perth Scorchers don’t even have that luxury any longer.
Brisbane Heat
At no stage have I ever been completely convinced that the Brisbane Heat have had what it takes to make it into the play-offs. To be fair to them they did have a nice run in the middle of the campaign when they threatened to latch on to the top four but that optimism soon fizzled out and they retreated to the mean, which in fairness is quite simply not good enough. At the end of this season they could do with tearing it up and starting again.
They have put so many eggs into the basket of their batsmen and when they don’t deliver, as has been the case all too often this term, they are left extremely vulnerable. As a result they have lost their last three matches and their season has all but ended as a competitive element as a result. Putting it simply, their bowlers aren’t good enough and their batting isn’t performing well enough.
Perth Scorchers
A few weeks ago the Perth Scorchers looked like they had got their campaign back on track but three successive defeats since then have ended their competition, and the greatest team in Big Bash history will not be having a go for the title this time around. The only thing the Scorchers have to play for are contracts for next season, but most of their players are of a high enough profile that they won’t go without work.
It has been a weird season for the Scorchers. I say that because their bowlers have been money in past years but they have been found wanting in a big way this time around. They have still won matches when their batting have caught fire but this has never been a franchise set up to win high scoring shootouts and that is why they head into this match on bottom of the pile.
Team News
The Brisbane Heat have made one change to their squad for this contest with Sam Heazlett in for Mitch Swepson. That would appear that the Heat have come to the realisation that they will need to win a shootout.
Perth Scorchers have made two changes to their squad for this match with Josh Inglis and Clint Hinchliffe coming in for Nathan Coulter-Nile and Michael Klinger. The former is injured while the latter appears to have been dropped.

Betting
I see no reason why we won’t get a high scoring match here. Both teams have nothing to lose in this one and the Brisbane Heat can’t win if it isn’t a game full of runs I would suggest. Perth Scorchers should feed all over this Brisbane bowling attack and assuming that they do that then the runs should flow throughout this match.
The boundaries are attainable on this ground and the pitches tend to be good so everything is in place for there to be a number of runs in the contest. The runs line sits at 320.5 which isn’t overly high for this ground. Both teams can look to entertain from here on in so I’m expecting that number to be covered with a bit to spare.
