Big Bash League 2020-21 – Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Thunder Tips and Betting Preview

While the Test match forms the cricketing interest during the day in Australia on Thursday, once the action concludes at the Sydney Cricket Ground a double header in the Big Bash League will begin starting with the clash between the Hobart Hurricanes and the Sydney Thunder at Optus Stadium in Perth.

This match sees the third placed team taking on the side who are currently second in the table where the winners will move to the top of the pile as we start to look towards the conclusion of the regular season and the play-offs which follow.

Hobart Hurricanes

The Hobart Hurricanes started their season very strongly with a couple of good wins but since then they have only won three of their next six matches so they are fighting for a little bit of consistency. By and large the Hurricanes are a game ahead of others in the competition so each match they play carries pressure. While they are sat in a good position in the table now, a bad week could easily see them fighting for their top five position which is something they won’t want.

The ‘Canes go into this match having lost their previous outing so they will be eager to get back to winning ways here. For that to happen they just need their batting line up to bat smartly and make sure they build partnerships throughout the innings as all too often they lose wickets in pairs which holds them back. That is all they need to do though because their bowlers are all in decent touch and can win matches with the right score to defend.

Sydney Thunder

Much like their opponents here, the Sydney Thunder go into this match off the back of a defeat so they too will want to get back on track with a victory here. The Thunder were on a five match winning run prior to what has to be considered a surprise loss to the Brisbane Heat in their last outing. It was probably the first time in the tournament that their bowlers let themselves down so that unit will be under a little bit of pressure to perform here.

The good thing for the Thunder is that their eye catching batting line up continues to perform and if we have seen anything from the first few matches on this ground this season it is that they will have a wicket from which they can continue to score heavily. You’ve got to think that the Thunder bowlers will live up to expectation again and if they do then there is every chance they can come out on top and hit the front in the league table.

Team News

The Hobart Hurricanes have released Charlie Wakim from their squad although he wasn’t getting a look in anyway. James Faulkner is still missing with his injury so there is a good chance the men in purple will be unchanged for this game.

The Sydney Thunder are going to be without Daniel Sams for this match as he has not passed the concussion protocol. Chris Tremain came in for him in the last match and it would make sense for him to start this one too.

Betting

I’m a little surprised that we can get an 11.5 sixes line here with these two being two of the bigger hitting sides in the competition. Although both attacks are competent you wouldn’t argue that they are massively out of the ordinary so I’m still expecting plenty of big shots to take place here. We know both batting teams can bat deep so they can utilise all of the 20 overs with the bat and be on the front foot all the time.

Although the previous match here didn’t have the sixes covered and that both second innings on this ground have been pathetic much of that was down to some chronically bad batting and a Perth attack which is getting better all the time. These two teams don’t strike me as having a bad day with the bat in them and given that they are full of power I expect the sixes to start coming and not stop until we go past the dozen mark.
