Big Bash League 2021-22 – Hobart Hurricanes vs Melbourne Renegades Tips and Betting Preview

There are four matches left in the regular season in the Big Bash League and the first of those will be played on Tuesday when the Hobart Hurricanes take on the Melbourne Renegades in a match which could complete the line up for the finals.

Hobart Hurricanes go into this match knowing that a win here will secure their spot in the playoffs whereas a defeat would set up a knockout match to qualify against the Melbourne Stars on Wednesday. The Renegades will not be extending their campaign beyond the regular stage.

Hobart Hurricanes

Hobart Hurricanes have two matches left in the regular season and if they win either of them they will be playing playoff cricket once again. Such is the condensed nature of this table that although they are yet to have secured their participation in the postseason, should they win their last two matches and claim the Bash Boost point in each they could yet finish second in the table if results go their way. They will want to get their playoff place secured as quickly as possible.

The Hurricanes kept their destiny in their own hands with a good win over the Sydney Thunder last time out when they delivered with the bat once again and this time their bowlers held their nerve down the stretch to get the job done. That is no bad thing with the pressure cooker beginning to heat up but as we’ve said all season, so much is on the Hobart batting here. Ben McDermott got some help last time out which was encouraging.

Melbourne Renegades

You would have to say that once again this has been a terrible season for the Melbourne Renegades. To be at the bottom of the table in a year where two of the teams have been absolutely decimated by Covid is not a good look. If the Renegades don’t win their last two matches they could finish bottom of the pile again, which would be a third time in succession in which they have claimed the wooden spoon. While blooding a lot of young players is admirable, such a record suggests it isn’t working out.

When you look down their XI, the Renegades should be doing so much better than they are but they just can’t seem to find a bowling attack. It has been a problem ever since they won the title and it remains the case. The concern there is that they are not blooding young players in that unit. They have a number of senior players who either aren’t able to do the job or the tactics within which they are working are all wrong. Either way, it hasn’t been good.

Team News

Hobart Hurricanes will continue to be without Scott Boland given his exertions in the Test series. Nathan Ellis and Joel Paris are both out injured and we already knew that Harry Brook had departed for England duty. Hobart could be unchanged.

Melbourne Renegades have been forced into changes because Mackenzie Harvey and Jake Fraser-McGurk have tested positive for Covid. Nic Maddinson misses out with injury while Kane Richardson has gone back home to deal with a family issue. Unmukt Chand is among four men added to the squad.

Betting

I took the sixes on this ground on Monday and the line was covered with ease and I see no reason to go away from that for this match, especially when you consider that when the Hobart Hurricanes played here as the away side against the Melbourne Renegades they posted a first innings score in excess of 200. I think we have seen throughout the competition that Hobart are going to look to bat big because there are one or two concerns over their bowlers keeping things tight.

The longer this competition has gone on, the worse the Renegades bowlers have got and that unit misses its most experienced man now. We’ve also seen in that time that they are just going to take the attack to the bowlers now there is no competitive edge on their matches so I expect these two sides to combine for more than 10.5 sixes. There is enough in both batting units to feast on weakened bowling attacks to get us to 11 sixes here.
