There is one more match in the Big Bash League season on Wednesday and it sees bottom of the table taking on the team currently at the top of it when the Melbourne Renegades welcome the Perth Scorchers to Marvel Stadium.
The Melbourne Renegades prop up the rest in the tournament at the minute but a win could move up well up to halfway. The Scorchers already lead the way in the table and could open up a nice little gap at the top with a win.
Melbourne Renegades
The Melbourne Renegades opened up their season with a win but things haven’t gone to plan since then. They have followed that opening success up with a couple of defeats in matches where you would have to say they were well beaten. After a couple of terrible seasons since they won the title you sense this is an important match because if they lose this and allow another rot to set in we’ve seen previously that they find it hard to get out of such a slump.
If the Renegades are going to do anything this season then they have to bat better than what they have done. They haven’t cleared 155 in their three matches to date and in this competition you don’t get a huge amount if you don’t score runs. The Renegades do have the attack to be competitive if they can put those runs on the board. To be fair to them they have been without key batters so far this season but they are beginning to come back so the excuses end here.
Perth Scorchers
There is barely a season go by in this competition where the Perth Scorchers aren’t among the best teams in it and that doesn’t look like changing here. They are unbeaten in their opening four matches and have played some fantastic cricket. The scary thing is that there is probably more to come from them. I say that because so far their batting efforts have largely revolved around an individual score rather than a collective performance.
Individual efforts are enough for this Scorchers side though because they look the business with the ball. They have all bases covered. They are hard to get away in the fielding restrictions overs and then they have the ability to squeeze teams with their spin options as well. That will take the heat off their batting because they know they don’t need to put up humungous totals to get the job done on most occasions.

Team News
The Melbourne Renegades have a couple of key players back from injury for this match in Aaron Finch and James Pattinson. They should strengthen a young side. Shaun Marsh and Cameron Boyce remain out with their calf injuries though.
Perth Scorchers haven’t named their squad for the match anywhere but with them not being able to go home you would imagine it will be the same squad which took on the Hobart Hurricanes earlier in the week. It should be the same starting XI too.
Betting
I’m going to look to ride the good form of Mitchell Marsh in this match and back him to cover his performance. I probably wouldn’t have been interested in it had he not bowled in the competition but he bowled a couple of overs against Hobart last time out and with the wicket at Marvel and the ground dimensions not always suiting the spinners I wouldn’t be surprised if he bowls a full allocation of overs here, which should assist him in covering a 33.5 line.
To be fair, we might not need him to bowl to cover this because he has been in brilliant form with the bat for a while now and although this Renegades bowling unit is competitive, with the exception of Zahir Khan there isn’t a huge amount of mystery to it. Marsh can smack the ball miles here or work the ball into the gaps so I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes it to 34 runs in this match. With catches and potentially wicket options for scoring on top of that the over in this performance looks a good chance.
