The second part of the double header in the Big Bash League on Sunday comes from The Gabba as the Brisbane Heat look to get their season back on the right track when they host the Sydney Sixers, who head north in good form.
The Heat start 2023 bottom of the Big Bash League table and with plenty of work to do if they are going to be around at the business part of the campaign. The Sixers have worked through a stutter at the start and look good for it.
Brisbane Heat
The Brisbane Heat have only played one match at The Gabba this season and it is the only win in the five games they have played overall. They will hope that is something of an omen heading into this match because if they don’t win here they are in danger of getting cut adrift in the race for the top five. There is no Bash Boost point to be won this season so the Heat are going to need to get into the top five by winning matches and a second here would be very welcome.
The big problem that the Heat have is their batting just hasn’t delivered the goods consistently enough. Even when they put up their highest score last time out it was off the back of one big individual innings rather than a collective effort. Their batting will be without Matt Renshaw for this match as well which won’t help. The positive is that the Test side left Michael Neser and Mitch Swepson alone so they can offer their services with the ball.
Sydney Sixers
It would have been easy for the Sydney Sixers to begin doubting themselves after they lost their opening two matches but they didn’t panic and have now won four on the spin and will be looking to put a bit more room between themselves and those behind them as they hit the halfway mark of their campaign in this match. We still haven’t seen a completely thorough performance from the Sixers but they are getting better with each win.
The Sixers’ bowlers have got up to speed now and they look a very tough unit to dislodge because of it. They have so much depth within their bowling ranks that they can even afford to rest and rotate through what has been a busy period with them having to get much of their season done before the Sydney Test match. They are not necessarily the most explosive with the bat but they are effective, especially when the bowlers go as well as they are and keep opposing teams below par.

Key Players
Had it not been for Colin Munro the Brisbane Heat would have been embarrassed in their last outing. The last thing a team needs against this Sydney side is to fall behind the run rate so the Kiwi could be key here.
Hayden Kerr is one of those players who goes under the radar for the Sydney Sixers. He bowls four tidy overs and is often called upon late in the innings and he is a good option to have down the order with the bat. This feels like a game he will make an impact on.
Betting
The run line for this match is up at 312.5 but that feels a little high to me even allowing for the fact the only other game cleared this total. That was because the Brisbane Heat scored 166 courtesy of a very streaky 70 odd from Sam Billings. In fact, the only two times the Heat have scored more than 150 this season an individual innings has got them there but this Sydney Sixers attack keeps coming at teams and doesn’t really allow for those knocks to flourish.
On the flip side of that we haven’t really seen the Sixers batting get free of the opposing bowling attack just yet and Brisbane aren’t exactly conceding a huge amount of runs and have some good new ball bowlers who can get early wickets, especially in conditions which they know well. I don’t think this run line will be reached unless there is a freak innings from someone which you can’t account for so I’m happy to take the under in the runs in this one.
