The Big Bash League season continues on Thursday when we head back to Marvel Stadium for the clash between the Melbourne Renegades and the Adelaide Strikers, the contest which takes us to the halfway point of the regular season.
These two sides are both outside of the top four going into the match but the Renegades will end the day in those positions with a win here. Adelaide would move to within a win of getting in if they come out on top.
Melbourne Renegades
The Melbourne Renegades have had an up and down opening to the season. They have only played four matches, which is the joint lowest in the competition, and have won two and lost two so this feels like a pivotal match for them. A win here would set them up nicely for the second half of their campaign while a loss would leave them with a bit of work to do in their last five matches. I expected good things from them this term but they have come up dry against both Sydney sides which isn’t ideal.
The good thing about the Renegades is when they have been good they have been very good and won matches fairly easily. When they haven’t quite been on it they have looked like a side who have been missing an ingredient. They have had enough time to find out what they need to build on from here though. It is probably their batting but to be fair they have played on a couple of tricky pitches which hasn’t helped their batting exploits.
Adelaide Strikers
The Adelaide Strikers have played five matches and have lost four of them including their New Year’s Eve clash with the Perth Scorchers. I think it is fair to say that the schedule has gone against the Strikers here with them having to play less than 48 hours after their previous match concluded. They have one or two aging players who might not be able to back up so quickly to the same level so that has to be something of a concern going into this one.
The Strikers have been clear throughout the competition that they are going to be aggressive with the bat. It will be interesting to see how that goes in this match because this Marvel wicket can be a tricky one to hit through the line on. That means they might need their bowling, which has struggled throughout the competition so far, to come to the party and if not get the job done for them, to certainly help out and assist the batters.

Key Players
Tom Rogers has eight wickets from his four matches for the Melbourne Renegades and with him taking the new ball against the pick of the Adelaide Strikers batters you get the feeling if he goes well here the Renegades will be on top.
Jamie Overton is now the leading run scorer for the Adelaide Strikers and he is also one of three bowlers who have a leading seven wickets for the team as well. With that in mind, you get the impression any Strikers win will consist of a performance from the England international.
Betting
I think the Melbourne Renegades are the ones to be on in this match. They are used to the pitch here at Marvel Stadium which can be a little on the tricky side and when the wicket isn’t flat and easy to hit through the line on I always want to be on the best bowling unit and that is very much with the Renegades here. This is one of those grounds in Australia where home advantage is a thing and I expect that to play out on the field here.
The Renegades have only played one match on this ground this season and they beat the Perth Scorchers in it and I think the Scorchers are better than the Strikers. Adelaide concede runs for fun and if they are not going to be able to pile them up themselves then this is going to be a tough day at the office for them. Add in the fact that they only played two days ago and I think there is enough reason to think the 4/5 on a Renegades win looks decent value here.
