There are two tournaments left in the PGA Tour season which means that we only have two more chances this season to make some money in the DFS fantasy games with our official fantasy partners at DraftKings.
As always there are some excellent value games on this week with some decent prize pools for us to have a go at so here are the ones we think are best to be picked and those we think you should avoid.
Profile
Crooked Stick is a monster of a course and as such we’re looking for players who can get it out there off the tee. Those with a decent short game won’t be far from our hit list either but in just a 69 man field those we like and don’t like will be shorter in number.
As always we like to use stats to help us with our picks and the three statistics we are going to focus on this week are:
- Strokes Gained Tee to Green
- Driving Distance
- Birdie Average
Star Men
This section is for those who cost $8,000 or higher. Given the quality of the field this week this is quite a high proportion of the available players.
MAIN PICK – Dustin Johnson $11,300
Everywhere you look at this golf course Dustin Johnson should be able to eat it alive. He is monstrous off the tee, hitting iron shots as well as he ever has done and his short game is so improved it is untrue. With the freedom to launch off the tee he should pile up the points this week.
PICK – Louis Oosthuizen $9,300
Almost without being noticed the South African has been nicely racking up the points and this is a course where he should continue to do that. He has great ability off the tee and his game up and around the green is good too so we like the South African in our teams this week.
PICK – Jimmy Walker $8,100
As we’ve mentioned in our betting preview Jimmy Walker ticks all the boxes this week and off the back of a solid effort last week we’re expecting big things. Given what he’s shown when he has got it right recently he is very cheap even in a field of this quality.
AVOID – Jordan Spieth $10,500
Only once in his last seven tournaments has Spieth scored more than 75 in a week and if we’re shelling out over a fifth of our budget on someone we want a better return than that. It might not come on this course where a lack of length could find the American out and even the rest of his game doesn’t look razor sharp.
AVOID – Matt Kuchar $8,200
Not for us this week. He is going to be found out in the length department and others just look much stronger in other areas of the game at the minute. 143rd in driving distance tells its own story and while he makes up for it in accuracy that isn’t really a factor this week so we’ll avoid him.
Mid-Range Players
We focus on those rated between $6600 and $8000. This is a very deep selection of players this week.
PICK – JB Holmes $7,600
This is the sort of course we are expecting JB Holmes to thrive on. He has all the length needed off the tee. He ranks second in driving distance and eighth in birdie average and they are two statistics which should see him score nicely at what is a surprisingly low price for the fit he has on this golf course.
PICK – Justin Thomas $7,300
It has been feast or famine for Thomas recently but with no cut this week we know we are going to get four rounds from him and we should be getting four decent rounds from him too given the length he has off the tee. He hasn’t shown his all-round game just yet but he does have some decent skills, a skill set which can see him perform well for his price here.
PICK – Charles Howell III $6,900
Howell III is an underrated driver of the ball. He gets it out there when needed and that puts him in a decent position from which to score nicely. He is in need of a big week which is a positive and is cheap enough to give space for some of the more expensive stars.
PICK – Ryan Palmer $6,800
We took the Texan last week and he delivered a nice return of 79pts for us and we’re expecting even more from him on a course where he can really pin the ears back and belt his ball out there. This is the sort of course that prior to his slump around the time of the death of his father than Palmer was eating for breakfast and with no cut we know we’ll get some decent points from him this week.
AVOID – Billy Horschel $7,900
Horschel is a former winner of this event but it wasn’t around here and there has to be a strong feeling that the golf course is too long for him. His form hasn’t been fantastic either and he needs a huge week to make it to the final event of the season. We can’t be taking him at this price.
AVOID – Luke Donald $7,000
Donald has put up a spirited campaign but he has never once been a man for the longer tracks and we don’t see that changing this time around either. Donald will make some gains around the greens but others will find them a lot better than he will so we can’t entertain him at this price.
Bottom End Players
This section is for those rated at $6500 or lower. There aren’t many in the field this week but at least we know there is no danger of any of them missing a cut as one doesn’t exist.
PICK – Charley Hoffman $6,400
We’re looking for players who can send it out there and Hoffman is certainly one who can. We’ve seen earlier in the season how he is more than just a good driver and the advantage he gains off the tee can see him outscore many others in this group.
AVOID – Graeme McDowell $6,500
Some long courses you can plot your way around and get by. This isn’t one of them so it doesn’t suit McDowell. Baby blues might come into play as well and although he’ll play all four rounds we are expecting McDowell’s season to finish with a low key week.
