The second British Masters champion since the rebirth of the tournament will be crowned on Sunday when the final round of the tournament is played at The Grove just outside of London.
Heading into the final round Sweden’s Alex Noren has a three shot lead as he chases a crazy third European Tour title since the beginning of July but on a soft golf course which has yielded plenty of birdies over the course of the week the chasing pack will still fancy their chances of reining him in over the last 18 holes.
Sunday Preview
Noren will begin the final round on 16 under par with Richard Bland his closest challenger on 13 under par. Tommy Fleetwood, Bernd Wiesberger, Peter Hanson and Richard Sterne are all 12 under par and have the quality to chase down the Swede.
Behind them Lee Westwood and Marcel Siem are a shot further back on 11 under par with Graeme McDowell not out of contention just yet on 10 under the card after 54 holes. There is a group of players on nine under but they surely need Noren’s help if they are to win.
Sunday Betting
The players who made it to the weekend will be off out in three balls once again on Sunday. There has been significant rain since the conclusion of the third round and with plenty more forecast for Sunday we are set for a soggy ending to this tournament with the weather likely to have a large say.
The final group of Alex Noren, Peter Hanson and Richard Bland go off the first tee at 12pm with Tommy Fleetwood, Richard Sterne and Bernd Wiesberger out at 11.50am and Marcel Siem, Lee Westwood and Graeme McDowell the third last group on the course at 11.40am. None of those appeal to me from a betting point of view but there is one slightly earlier that does.
This will become a very long golf course on Sunday with an even stronger emphasis on hitting the fairways and the greens. With that in mind Shane Lowry might well have an advantage over Soren Kjeldsen and Lee Slattery who aren’t the longest hitters in the world. The other advantage the Irishman has is a wonderful short game so at 11/8 he could well be a good bet to come through that group.
Kjeldsen is monotonously straight but he’ll be firing some lengthy irons into these pins and his putting has been questionable in the past. Lowry shot a solid 68 on Saturday and is six under for the par 5s this week. That is a significant stat and one which leads me to thinking he is a good thing in the 11.10 group.
