The Florida leg of the Caribbean Premier League kicks off on Thursday night when the Barbados Tridents take on the Guyana Amazon Warriors in what is a pretty big match for both sides.
Barbados have seen themselves drop out of the playoff spots over the last week or so and have to win at least one of their last two to get back in while Guyana go into the match knowing if they win either of their last two they will all but secure a top two finish which is significant in this competition.
Barbados Tridents
Since Barbados lost AB de Villiers and Wayne Parnell they have been dealt a couple of heavy beatings so on their way to Florida they will have needed to take stock and work out how they can win matches without those pair. The simple way would be for their big players to take more responsibility.
The big concern for me as far as the Tridents go is their bowling attack which without Jason Holder as well who is on international duty looks a little like cannon fodder and what will surely be a very good batting deck to promote and sell the game in the country that could leave the Tridents very exposed.
Guyana Amazon Warriors
Guyana have lost their captain Martin Guptill which isn’t ideal but Nic Maddinson is a quality player and once he beds in we should see him go really well especially here in Florida where the wicket is expected to be flat. They will need something from their batting line up but this could be right up Dwayne Smith’s street.
The Amazon Warriors will be out to end a slump here which has seen them lose their last two matches and while they shouldn’t be overly concerned because they just ran into a Johnson Charles storm in their previous match they do just need to be careful else they may undo what was an excellent start to their campaign.
Betting
I’m expecting a good game of cricket here but I’m not going to get too involved in the betting until we’ve had a good look at the pitch and things. I’m fully expecting it to be a flat belter as any should be when promoting and enhancing the game is at stake but I would rather see it with my own eyes before I load up on things.
For this game I’m just going with a simple match bet and that is on the Guyana Amazon Warriors who look the better all-round side to me. They have more form batsmen in their ranks and they have much the better functioning bowling attack which has enough variety to have all bases covered.
Barbados have just looked a little out of touch in recent matches and while they have danger men in the likes of Kieron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran there is no doubt in my mind that Guyana have more of them and that can be significant to the end result. I’m with the Amazon Warriors in this one.
