We have reached the semi-final stage of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with both matches taking place over the course of Wednesday night, or the early hours of Thursday morning in this part of the world, as we find out who will compete in Sunday’s final.
We have the two main contenders for the tournament in each semi-final and favourites to book a reunion in the final but the two challengers have shown they deserve to be in the final four and certainly won’t go down without a fight, which should make for an exciting night of football.
USA vs Panama (00.30 – Viaplay Sports 1)
The first semi-final sees the defending champions and host nation USA looking to make it through to another Gold Cup final when they go up against a Panama side who hold claims for being the best team we’ve seen in the tournament so far.
This was always going to be a challenge for USA given the number of top level stars they have left behind for this event. They wanted to see just how deep their depth chart is and they have found that it is quite deep, although the two fair level opponents they have faced have both held them pretty comfortably. I think Panama is a step up on anything they have played so far so if the States are to be at the final of their own party they might need their best effort so far. Panama really laid down their title credentials in the quarter final when they beat a previously hard to beat Qatar side. They didn’t just beat them, they demolished them in truth and a repeat of that effort is likely to be enough to get the job done here. I hope it is because I am effectively on Panama at 5/1 having backed them outright. I’ve seen nothing to suggest we shouldn’t stick with the girl we brought to the dance.

Jamaica vs Mexico (03.00 – Viaplay Sports 1)
The second semi-final of the tournament comes from Las Vegas as the pre-event favourites Mexico look to make it through to the title showdown when they go up against the Reggae Boyz of Jamaica who have looked pretty good so far.
Jamaica are yet to be behind in the tournament which bodes well for them but clearly this is going to be the toughest test of that record because after a bit of a mess in the Nations League last month, Mexico are beginning to look like the team many expected them to be. You sense there is more to come from ‘El Tri’ as well as they go about reclaiming dominance in the CONCACAF region. Jamaica have some standout players though, although they are mostly in attacking areas. Their defence can be vulnerable and that is a concern but there is certainly plenty of reasons to believe that the Premier League attack that Jamaica have can trouble the Mexicans going the other way. These two sides were in the same Nations League group with the matches ending 1-1 and 2-2 while Mexico won their World Cup qualifying meetings 2-1. That makes me think we are in for goals in this match, particularly as the Jamaica squad for those matches didn’t contain the likes of Demarai Gray and Michail Antonio. The goal line for this one is as low as 2 and I like the over here.
