County Cricket 2025 – Derbyshire Team Guide

Derbyshire had a season to forget in 2024 and Mickey Arthur will be expected to deliver a much better outing in both red ball cricket and white ball and will be under pressure to do so. The outsiders have plenty to prove going into the 2025 campaign.

Strengths

Derbyshire have a lot of all-rounders in their ranks but you would say that they look best equipped to go better in the white ball game, as is often the case with a relatively young squad. If their bowlers come together in the T20 in particular then they could be a real threat in the Vitality Blast but they would need their experienced players to perform to the level we know that they can rather than age badly.

Weaknesses

Derbyshire don’t have the deepest batting line up even allowing for the fact that Caleb Jewell has been signed at the top of the order. He has never batted in the county game before and it will be interesting to see how he goes against the moving ball early in the season. The rest of the line up have some question marks over them but Derbyshire will need them to fire if they are to improve on the dismal 2024 campaign.

Trophy Prospects

It has to be said that it would be a real surprise if Derbyshire challenge for any silverware this season but they may not lose as many to The Hundred as was previously the case and so they could push for something there. They only missed out on the quarter final of the Vitality Blast by a couple of points last year but others look to have strengthened more in T20 cricket. Anything that doesn’t involve finishing bottom is a successful red ball season.

England Duty

Unless the potential of Harry Moore is built on this season and England take a punt on him in a white ball series when the main protagonists get a game off or something then it is unlikely England will be worrying the phone of Mickey Arthur too much although Zak Chappell has the sort of pace that England like.

Predicted Championship Finishing Position: 8th
