Middlesex had a very frustrating time of it last term where they looked to be making their way back to the top division of the County Championship only to be collared in the race for promotion late on and they had another no show in the white ball competitions. Financial issues dogged them last term so the payout from The Hundred was much needed and a better showing is expected this time around.
Last Season
County Championship: Third in Division 2
One Day Cup: Group Stage
Vitality Blast: Group Stage
Club
Captain: Toby Roland-Jones
Overseas Player(s): Kane Williamson, Dane Paterson, Josh Little (T20)
Ins: Ben Geddes, Zafar Gohar, Aaryan Sawant, Naavya Sharma, Sebastian Morgan
Outs: Mark Stoneman, Ethan Bamber, Martin Andersson, Robbie White, Thilan Walallawita
One to watch: Nathan Fernandes – the batter has been touted as a prospect for a while but hasn’t been able to nail down a place in the side at the top of the order. The departure of Mark Stoneman might have opened the door.
Championship Odds: 4/1 General
Strengths
It is very rare that Middlesex aren’t able to fill a decent bowling attack and if Toby Roland-Jones can stay fit for the entire season then they should be nicely stocked with the ball once again. Tom Helm and Ryan Higgins are solid performers at county level even though I’m not the biggest fan of the former and if Dane Paterson can enjoy his time in the capital then you would imagine that Middlesex will be competitive with the ball throughout the campaign.

Weaknesses
By not owning their home ground, Middlesex are always vulnerable to pitches which are hard to yield results on and the absence of a top class spinner will always hinder them in that quest. That is why they were picked up at the back end of last season and if they are to fail to get promoted this term then that might be a reason why. Middlesex need their quality seamers to perform on the road as away wins are essential if they are to push for promotion.
Trophy Prospects
The priority for Middlesex will be to achieve promotion back to Division One in the County Championship and most of their attention will go into that but when you bring someone of the class of Kane Williamson over for 10 T20 matches then you have to be looking to go deep in that competition, especially when Josh Little has been added to the ranks too. Middlesex don’t have a great record overall in the Vitality Blast but we should expect a strong showing from them this time around.
England Duty
If England picked on county performances these days then surely Ryan Higgins would be on the radar for an international call up but the fact is that they go on hunches now so unless a hard hitting opener like Nathan Fernandes comes out like a house on fire it is unlikely that Brendon McCullum will need the phone number of Lord’s this term.
Predicted Championship Finishing Position: 3rd
