Northamptonshire had a tough time of it last season having failed to do anything significant in the Championship in their first campaign back in Division 2 while the 50 over competition was a real disappointment for them with the personnel they had available for it. The highlight of the year was a quarter final in the T20 but they had no answer to Somerset in that.

Strengths
Northamptonshire have plenty of all-rounders and if a couple of them can come off with the bat and the ball then there is no reason why Darren Lehmann’s first season as head coach can’t be a competitive one. David Willey will bring the leading all-round role for the Vitality Blast but if there are improvements in a couple of the younger 3D players then Northants will bat deep and will have plenty of bowling options to try and force wins.

Weaknesses
You look at the bowling resources for Northamptonshire this season and you have to be concerned. The loss of Jack White looks massive and although Lehmann moved quick to bring in Liam Guthrie, were something to happen to Ben Sanderson this season could really get away from Northants unless one of the all-rounders can be a top quality third seamer or a spinner comes from somewhere in a warm summer.
Trophy Prospects
Northamptonshire don’t look equipped for a promotion tilt in the Championship because it is hard to see where 20 wickets come from, especially when the Kookaburra ball is in play. Darren Lehmann will bring about an aggressive intent but even he can’t overperform the limitations that he is working with. The internationals that arrive for the Vitality Blast could lead to a title bid in that and Northants will surely expect to go much better in the One Day Cup than they did previously.
England Duty
England have been regularly on the phone to David Willey in times gone by but those days are well behind us now and there is nobody coming through who will be on the radar of Brendon McCullum and co anytime soon it has to be said.
Predicted Championship Finishing Position: 7th
