County Cricket 2025 – Nottinghamshire Team Guide

Nottinghamshire had a surprisingly poor campaign by their high standards last term. They didn’t really factor at all in the County Championship and put together two of their worst white ball campaigns in living memory. There is a transition going on at Trent Bridge and the rebuild might need another year before we see them at their best.

Last Season

County Championship: Eighth in Division 1

One Day Cup: Group Stage

Vitality Blast: Group Stage

Club

Captain: Haseeb Hameed

Overseas Player(s): Kyle Verreynne, Mohammad Abbas, Fergus O’Neill, Daniel Sams (T20), Moises Henriques (T20)

Ins: Conor McKerr, Tom Giles, Sam Seecharan, Travis Holland

Outs: Alex Hales, Luke Fletcher, Fateh Singh, Toby Pettman, Tom Loten

One to watch: Farhan Ahmed – burst onto the scene at the end of last season and could potentially be the number one spin option this term

Championship Odds: 16/1 General

Strengths

Nottinghamshire will begin the season with plenty of bowling options but how long that remains the case with their injury record and the fact that if they remain fit England will come calling for some remains to be seen. England don’t have any cricket for the opening couple of months of the campaign though which should give Nottinghamshire the chance to make hay in the first part of the season.

Weaknesses

With Ben Duckett unlikely to be available for much of the season then the batting looked an out and out class act light even allowing for an overseas batter coming into the side at some point. Haseeb Hameed is the best batter in the side but he has the captaincy to deal with and that might get to him if this side starts to struggle once again. It might be that a youngster or two emerge but on paper the batting looks the weakest suit.

Trophy Prospects

Nottinghamshire will be looking at the white ball cricket for a shot at a trophy this season but even then the departure of Alex Hales leaves their batting looking light. They might find some form from the unheralded players in the Vitality Blast which allows them to have some confidence to take into the One Day Cup but that aside this looks likely to be another campaign without challenging for silverware at Trent Bridge.

England Duty

Nottinghamshire will be resigned to seeing very little of Ben Duckett this term and the prognosis would be that if Josh Tongue stays fit England will be using a lot of him this summer. Dillon Pennington and Joe Clarke are others who could make their way into the England set up over the course of the campaign too.

Predicted Championship Finishing Position: 7th
