County Cricket 2025 – Somerset Team Guide

Somerset had an excellent campaign last term without getting over the line in any of the three competitions but they will know if they keep knocking on the door it will open again soon. A trophy will be their aim this season but they desire the Championship title in particular.

Last Season

County Championship: Third in Division 1

One Day Cup: Final

Vitality Blast: Final

Club

Captain: Lewis Gregory

Overseas Player(s): Matt Henry, Migael Pretorius, Riley Meredith (T20)

Ins: N/A

Outs: Sonny Baker, Ned Leonard, George Thomas, Roelof Van der Merwe, Ben Green (loan)

One to watch: Will Smeed – a superstar against the white ball and has now signed a red ball contract and would surely soon be on the England radar if it goes successfully.

Championship Odds: 13/2 General

Strengths

There is a lot to like about Somerset with the bat in hand in all three of the formats and if the red ball contract to Will Smeed sees him going after the bowling in the dismissive way he does against the white ball then he would put a lot of time back into the game for the Somerset bowlers to force results. Somerset can put teams under a lot of pressure at Taunton and it would be a surprise if we don’t see some big scores from them this season.

Weaknesses

Home advantage is a strength but when they go away from Taunton and the turning tracks there they can be found out a tough. They need a fully fit Matt Henry with the ball for the opening half of the season because if they are going to challenge Surrey this season then they need to be up with the pace from the get go. It is only a minor weakness but it will be interesting to see if it bites them again.

Trophy Prospects

Somerset should be a force in all three competitions this season. It might be that they have one call up or two too many for The Hundred for them to be at their best in the One Day Cup but they made the final despite that last season. In the Vitality Blast and the County Championship they look huge runners, particularly the latter should it be a hot summer like some are suggesting. That would bring their spinners right into the game.

England Duty

Shoaib Bashir has left to join Glamorgan on loan for the first month of the season but when he returns he will be on the England radar. Jack Leach looks to have been passed over but if England need a second spinner anywhere he might get the nod. Will Smeed will interest England if he starts smacking runs in the Championship while Tom Kohler-Cadmore is more than good enough to get into the England white ball set up.

Predicted Championship Finishing Position: 2nd
