County Cricket 2025 – Sussex Team Guide

Sussex rode some high class overseas signings last term to dominate Division Two of the County Championship and their immediate aim will be survival in the top flight but they are a club with a recent history of winning white ball competitions and will be aiming to get back into position to have a go at achieving that once again.

Overseas Player(s): Daniel Hughes, Jayden Seales, Jaydev Unadkat, Gurinder Sandhu

One to watch: George Thomas – has a high upside and a move from Somerset might be what brings it out of him

Championship Odds: 20/1 Coral

Strengths

Somerset have done some brilliant work on their bowling attack in the close season and if they are going to survive in the Championship this season they will be banking on getting 20 wickets regularly. They will always have an overseas bowler for the Championship and if Ollie Robinson’s England career is behind him then there is a real new ball threat throughout the campaign. A couple of quality spinners will help in the middle overs too.

Weaknesses

The batting. There is no Cheteshwar Pujara or Steve Smith this season and while Daniel Hughes is expected to churn out the runs and Tom Haines has a technique which should serve him well but they will need some of the younger players to have learned on the job. Sussex might not be involved in too many high scoring matches which will help the batters but you have to score solid runs to keep the dogs at bay and it remains to be seen if this Sussex order have it in them.

Trophy Prospects

Sussex won’t be worried about winning trophies in red ball cricket. If they are going to win silverware it will come in white ball cricket and with the likes of Jofra Archer and Tymal Mills dotting in from time to time in the T20 it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if they went two better than last season in that competition. Hundred call ups is likely to hinder their hopes in the One Day Cup but they blooded some players last season which could serve them well here.

England Duty

You wouldn’t think Jofra Archer will be around for many matches in the Championship but he could slip in for some T20 stuff later in the season. Ollie Robinson looks like a thing of the past where England is concerned but Tom Haines has the class to be involved if England ever go back to picking players with technique over strike rates.

Predicted Championship Finishing Position: 8th
