County Cricket 2025 – Worcestershire Team Guide

Worcestershire were expected to be relegated to Division 2 last season but having defied those odds they will be looking for another season of consolidation in the top flight this term. They will also be looking to get back to contending for white ball trophies although they probably need a bit of reinforcing ahead of those competitions.

Last Season

County Championship: Sixth in Division 1

One Day Cup: Quarter Final

Vitality Blast: Group Stage

Club

Captain: Brett D’Oliviera

Overseas Player(s): Jacob Duffy, Ben Dwarshuis (T20)

Ins: Ben Allison, Fateh Singh

Outs: Josh Cobb, Olly Cox, Joe Leach

One to watch: Jacob Duffy – the new ICC number one T20 bowler will be looking to make his mark with the red ball at New Road

Championship Odds: 33/1 General

Strengths

Worcestershire showed last season that they have enough goods with the bat to remain a Division One side but with the bowling looking a little weaker on paper with the retirement of Joe Leach they might need more from their batters if they are going to survive as easily this time around. There is no overseas batter this season so unless that changes they will be looking at the likes of Jake Libby, Gareth Roderick and Adam Hose to score big runs.

Weaknesses

New Road. It is very rare that Worcestershire go the whole summer without flooding on their home ground and if that happens in the middle of the season it will put a spanner in the works for everyone. For a side who could be utilising a couple of spinners throughout the course of the season in all formats they could really use a dry surface so they will be praying that the river doesn’t flood this term.

Trophy Prospects

Worcestershire aren’t a side who are equipped to win the Championship. Their trophy would be finishing halfway in Division One and that would be an achievement that shouldn’t be downplayed. They haven’t been hit with too many call ups from The Hundred which gives them a chance in the One Day Cup but they will need the best of Ben Dwarshuis with the ball if they are going to be competitive in the T20 competition.

England Duty

The England radar isn’t likely to make its way to Worcestershire too often this summer now that Josh Tongue has departed the scene. Jake Libby is probably good enough to play above county level but he doesn’t play the style that the England red ball side like so unless someone like Adam Hose had a season to remember I don’t think Ashley Giles will need to save the ECB numbers.

Predicted Championship Finishing Position: 10th
