The Barbados Tridents will look to move into the top four of the Caribbean Premier League table on Thursday night when they take on the defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders at the delightful Kensington Oval.
The Tridents sit a point behind the St Lucia Zouks in the race for the final play-off spot but this is one of their two games in hand of Darren Sammy’s men. The Knight Riders know that a win here will secure another postseason campaign.
Barbados Tridents
It seems that whatever they do the Barbados Tridents can’t seem to string successive wins together. They would have expected to beat the Jamaica Tallawahs last time out but in truth they never looked like doing so which will disappoint them. Not only did it stop them from moving into the top four, but it kept the Tallawahs interested in the race for the last play-off spot where a win would have ended their interest.
The Tridents need to find a way to be more consistent with the bat. They look absolutely horrendous against spin in particular but even against the seam they have been found wanting. In four of their six matches Barbados have been reduced or restricted to 140 runs or less and not many matches are won in this tournament with that sort of output. To be fair their bowling are trying hard so if they can find some runs success can still come their way.
Trinbago Knight Riders
The big question regarding the Trinbago Knight Riders heading into this match is how much they have been able to retain any rhythm. They have only played twice in pretty much two weeks and one of those was rained out less than half way through so it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise to see the defending champions a little sloppy to begin with here and having to work their way into the contest here.
We’ve seen the Knight Riders do plenty of good things with the bat in this tournament so far which bodes well for them. What we haven’t seen enough of is their bowling best. If we do get that between now and the end of the campaign, the chances of them winning this tournament for a third straight season would appear to be very high. We do need to see that though because you would think it is hard for them to defend their title otherwise.
Team News
The Barbados Tridents will be without Sandeep Lamichhane from here on in as he has joined up with the Nepal squad. Joshua Bishop or Hayden Walsh are in line to replace him. Dan Christian should be lined up for his Tridents debut.
Sunil Narine has missed the last couple of matches for the Trinbago Knight Riders side but if he is fit he will return with Akeil Hosein most likely to be the man to make way on a pitch which could really suit the wily off-spinner.
Betting
I would expect the Trinbago Knight Riders to win this match but I’m a little wary that they’ve barely played for a couple of weeks and that is enough to put me off getting involved in them at a short price. I’m no keener on the Barbados Tridents until they convince me that they can offer something substantial with the bat which hasn’t happened yet.
With that in mind I’ll go to the side markets where the performance line of Sunil Narine catches my eye at 38.5. This pitch should suit him as it is slow and he can confuse the batsmen who haven’t played spin all that well in this competition. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Narine take a couple of wickets to cover this line but he pretty much has a free shot with the bat and could easily clear a decent chunk of it in that discipline. Be it bat, ball or in the field this line looks coverable.
