It is the second week of the FedEx Cup playoffs and as such there are some decent Fantasy Golf tournaments with our fantasy partners DraftKings this week with some cheap buy ins potentially offering up some really big prizes so this looks like another decent week to target.
Profile
TPC Boston is a really good course which tests all parts of a game. Scoring isn’t necessarily going to be too low this week so pars could be a good score both for the golfers and the players that we pick.
As ever we like to use stats with our picks and these are the statistics we’ll be using in the main this week in the hope of identifying a couple of low picked players who could score well for us.
- All Around Rank
- Strokes Gained Around the Green
- Scrambling
Star Men
This is for those players who cost $8000 or more. With anyone who is anyone here in the main there is a sizeable group in this section this week.
MAIN PICK – Patrick Reed $10,200
Last week’s winner is our main pick this week. He stats incredibly well as we’ve mentioned in our betting preview. His all-around game is very strong and he is one of the best scramblers on the PGA Tour. He has been very consistent all season and should be able to score some big points this week.
PICK – Justin Rose $9,700
Justin Rose won the Olympics on a Gil Hanse designed course last month so he knows what they are all about. We can’t really read too much into his statistics this season because he has been injured for large parts but played through them given how big a year it is but he will be full of confidence from winning Olympic Gold and now that the media commitments have come and gone I’m expecting a big run from the gold medallist.
PICK – Phil Mickelson $9,300
If you need a scrambler you tend to head towards Phil Mickelson but his whole game has been pretty consistent this season. He sits seventh in the all-around ranking which is really high for him and shows how well he is striking the ball overall. Mickelson is also fourth in scrambling so statistically he’s for us this week.
PICK – Brooks Koepka $8,700
Brooks Koepka is third in the all-around ranking on the Tour this year which highlights how good he has played considering he is yet to win a tournament. That win isn’t far away and it could well be this week if he brings it all together. He has the length to clear the trouble off the tee and I’m expecting a decent week.
AVOID – Henrik Stenson $10,700
Pulled out with a knee injury last week and has mentioned how the problem still exists so that isn’t ideal by any stretch. When we’re forking out this much the last thing we want is him to drop out at any point so there just isn’t worth the risk here for us.
AVOID – Emiliano Grillo $9,000
Grillo had a good week last week but we’re not convinced you can compete around here without a good short game and that is where the man from Argentina is weak. He doesn’t gain enough from tee to green over the other players to get an advantage that makes up for his short game issues so he isn’t for me.
AVOID – Branden Grace $8,200
Missed his last two cuts and hasn’t offered anything in terms of points in that time. He goes into the tournament ranked outside the top 80 in all three key statistics that we are using this week so if we have them right he isn’t likely to score the amount of points we would like for the price we are paying.
Mid-Range Players
This section is for players who cost between $6,600 and $8,000. There are quite a few in this range this week as well.
PICK – Sean O’Hair $7,800
Excellent finish for the American last week and with him ranking 11th in the all-around ranking this season he is statistic in place to build on that here. A solid putter when his confidence is up we’re expecting another decent score from him.
PICK – Kevin Kisner $7,400
KK is coming back into form and that means we are going to see the man who should be ranked higher than he is in the all-around statistic. There is no real weakness in his game so with his confidence high again I’m expecting another solid run from him.
PICK – Jerry Kelly $7,100
One of the best scramblers on the PGA Tour. He sits seventh in that statistic and with this course not being the most demanding off the tee that should be a good thing for Kelly who is going to need to big week if he is to go much further this season.
PICK – Ryan Palmer $6,700
Slowly coming back to something resembling his best form which is encouraging as is his high all-around ranking of 10 on the PGA Tour. Has the length to clear the trouble and the ability around the greens to get the job done and he might just go under the radar here to be a good pick.
AVOID – Jhonattan Vegas $7,400
You can never truly predict what you are going to get from Vegas but that in itself is a problem but we do know that he struggles with a short game and has more iffy weeks than good ones so in a tournament like this he isn’t for me.
AVOID – Kyle Reifers $6,800
Hardly any form to speak of and nothing that suggests he is going to plough through this course and rack up the points all of a sudden. In comparison to others he is quite expensive and he isn’t for us at the prices.
Bottom End Players
This final section is for those players ranked $6,500 and although this is a scaled down field there are still a decent contingent of them too.
PICK – Aaron Baddeley $6,300
Anyone who can putt like he can is always going to be useful for us. He sits second in strokes gained around the green and he is in the top 10 for scrambling and with no emphasis on accuracy off the tee the Australian should bank the points this week.
PICK – Scott Piercy $6,200
If you are looking for a long hitter at a cheap price then Piercy is your man. He might not finish right at the top of the tournament but his length alone should see him make the cut and with the drivable holes which play into his hands his four round score should be decent.
PICK – Luke Donald $6,100
Not the longest off the tee but from the fairways there are few better in the world even now. He has a dream of a short game and a good record on the course and although he will be a popular pick this week he should ramp up your score.
PICK – Bryce Molder $5,800
Potentially a pick that will go unused by many but his scrambling stats are fantastic. He is third in strokes gained around the greens and leads the tour in scrambling itself. As I keep repeating this isn’t a demanding course off the tee so look for Molder to be solid enough and outperform this price.
AVOID – Martin Laird $6,400
Wonderful ball striker but a horrible short game and that can find him out this week. He might well make the cut especially as only 26 players won’t make it but I’m not sure he’ll do much more than that so he’s easy to swerve at this price.
AVOID – Graeme McDowell $6,300
Became a father again this week and isn’t in the best of form either. I know the nappy factor is a big thing in sport but perhaps not this soon. Look for another week to have Gmac on board.
AVOID – Fabian Gomez $5,600
If you take the Olympics out you won’t have got much output from the Argentine in recent months and in a field of this quality we want plenty of points so he isn’t for us here.
