European Championship Darts 2022 – Last 16 Tips and Betting Preview

The second round of the European Championship takes place on Saturday when the eight matches are played out across two sessions of play out in Dortmund, one which by its conclusion will give us the quarter final line up.

Two of the big names in the draw bit the dust on Friday evening but in the main the leading lights who qualified for the tournament have all made it into the last 16 and now the format is up to the best of 19 legs we should see them produce even better darts.

Afternoon Session

The second round begins with an all-Dutch battle as Vincent van der Voort goes up against the UK Open champion Danny Noppert. When they are done the former champion James Wade will be looking to make it back into the final day of the tournament once again. Dirk van Duijvenbode is the man standing in his way. The number one seed Luke Humphries is up in the penultimate match in the session. He takes on Ryan Searle before the top half matches conclude with the highest ranked player left in this part of the draw when Michael Smith faces the exciting youngster Josh Rock in the pick of the afternoon matches.

Evening Session

The evening session is all about the bottom half of the draw and the action begins with a clash between Ross Smith and Dimitri Van den Bergh before the world champion Peter Wright takes to the stage. He was due to meet Gerwyn Price in a humdinger of a second round tussle but Rowby-John Rodriguez didn’t read that script and it is him who will face the Scot. The penultimate match of the day sees Dave Chisnall looking to continue his good form when he takes on the Welsh star Jonny Clayton and then rounding off the day is the man who beat Michael van Gerwen in the first round in Chris Dobey. He goes up against Jose de Sousa for a quarter final spot.

Betting

There are a couple of bets which tempted me over the course of the day but the lines are just a little too high for what I would have wanted so in the end I have settled on one bet. That comes in the form of the match between Dave Chisnall and Jonny Clayton where I’m going with the form even at odds against and taking Chisnall to win the match. Chisnall looked awesome in the opening round and while Stephen Bunting didn’t show up, sometimes it is easy to relax and get dragged down to the level of a faltering opponent but Chisnall had none of that.

Clayton had a brilliant year in 2021 and while he was never going to hit those heights he hasn’t won a European Tour event this season and hasn’t really offered a lot more in the TV events with just a couple of semi-finals in the lower level TV tournaments so the Welsh star could be there for the taking. He was pretty down on himself after his win on Friday evening and you just sense there might be a shortage of confidence in him. That won’t be the case for Chisnall who has won a European Tour event and a Players Championship event in the last month or so and so I like him in this one.
