FIFA World Cup 2022 European Qualifiers – Wednesday 31st March Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The international break comes to a close on Wednesday evening when the last remaining matches in this set of qualifying games for the FIFA World Cup 2022 take place on what is a busy but even this early possibly a defining night of action.

As with Tuesday there are plenty of sides who have started their campaign well who will be looking to consolidate that while there are others who have begun much more slowly who need to kick start their campaign here.

Group B

This group is already getting quite interesting with Spain having already dropped points it in and the former world champions will be eager to avoid slipping up in it again when they host a Kosovo outfit who were well beaten in their first match in the group. Greece are the team who have taken a point of Spain so far and they now play their second match of what could be quite a competitive section when they host Georgia on Wednesday.

Group C

Italy and Switzerland have complete control of Group C already and while the latter are not in action on Wednesday, the former can consolidate their position when they make the trip to take on a Lithuania side who were beaten in their only match of the group so far. The other match is a big one for the two teams involved as Northern Ireland host Bulgaria in a game both sides go into looking for their first win of the campaign.

Group D

When the draw was made the ‘Group of Death’ section was Group D and already we are seeing some competitive action. Of the four matches in the group so far three have been drawn so it will be interesting to see what we get on Wednesday. The defending world champions France will be on the road when they face Bosnia and Herzegovina while in the other match Ukraine will be looking for their first win of the group after starting with a pair of draws. They host the side expected to be the stragglers in Kazakhstan.

Group F

Another section which is shaping up to be a competitive one is Group F where Denmark set the early pace and will look to maintain their 100% record when they travel to the team who are expected to be their closest challengers in Austria. With the top two in the group meeting, Scotland will be looking to take advantage when they host a Faroe Islands side who merit some respect. One team who don’t carry that tag are Moldova and they could be sitting ducks for Israel.

Group I

England are already in command of Group I and they will look to stay in that position in one of the biggest matches in the group when they host Poland at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night. An England win might leave the rest playing for second place so Hungary will be out to run up the score when they travel to Andorra. The same will apply to Albania who should be able to fill their boots against a very poor San Marino side to say the least.

Group J

2014 champions Germany already being top of this group is no surprise and they will look to remain there when they host a much improved and competitive North Macedonia outfit. It is more of a surprise that Armenia sit second in the group on two wins from two and they will be looking to extend that record when they host a Romania side who need to get moving quickly. Iceland have not started the group how they would have wanted and so their trip to Liechtenstein is already a must win encounter.

Betting

I’ll finish the week off with a couple of bets, the first of which comes in the form of Denmark who I think can see off an Austria side who I’m not convinced are as good as they look on paper. Austria were held in their opening match by Scotland and went behind to the Faroe Islands before waking up and turning things around but I’m not convinced that they will be able to start slowly against a Denmark side who have scored for fun in the group so far, admittedly against lower level opposition, but who are always tough to break down. This is a Denmark side who in the last five months or so have been to Iceland, England and Israel and won, all without conceding. They have the class and the quality to get the job done here and maintain their 100% start.

Should that be the case then Scotland can take a massive step towards hunting down a play-off place when they host the Faroe Islands at Hampden Park. That might add a little bit of pressure to the home side and if they go into this game thinking that it is an easy night’s work they could quickly come unstuck. Although their draw with Moldova doesn’t look much, the Faroes gave Austria a bit of a scare on Sunday night and have generally been improving over the last couple of years. It is now six games in a row that the Faroes have scored in while Scotland haven’t kept a clean sheet in five and the last clean sheet they did keep came against a Czech Republic outfit whose squad was decimated by Covid-19 withdrawals. Scotland don’t keep clean sheets but surely they’ll take the game to their opposition in a must win game so the 23/10 on both teams to score looks incredibly overpriced to me.
