The second round of the French Open will come to a close across the Roland Garros complex in Paris on Thursday when those who were not in action on Wednesday will take to the clay courts once again, looking to battle it through to the last 32.
We saw some big names on show on Wednesday and they keep on coming over the course of Thursday on what looks like being a very competitive card from the start of the day right through to the end.
Day 4 Recap
We saw comfortable wins for the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Belinda Bencic and Coco Gauff but the likes of Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz had to come through deciding set epics in order to seal their place in the third round. There were more shocks over the course of Wednesday with Maria Sakkari, Emma Raducanu and Taylor Fritz all dumped out of the tournament. Cameron Norrie was another of the comfortable winners.
It was a level day for us betting wise and that was secured fairly early on in the day when Aliaksandra Sasnovich came from a set down to overcome Emma Raducanu in pretty emphatic style. The men’s match we had a bet on was frustrating because Diego Schwartzman won his match but only in a deciding set, coming from two sets down to win. The sets he won were 6-2 6-2 6-2 but sadly he didn’t get going early enough for our liking.
Philippe Chatrier Court
It is the highest ranked men’s player on show on Thursday who will get the action up and running on the main court as Daniil Medvedev takes on Laslo Djere for a place in the third round. When they are done we will see Madison Keys looking to make progress when she takes on one of the three French players on show on the Philippe Chatrier Court. That is Caroline Garcia. The next French player to step up will be Gilles Simon in what could be the final match of his career. He takes on Steve Johnson to round off the day session. The night session contains a women’s match for the first time this week when Alize Cornet meets the former champion Jelena Ostapenko.
Suzanne Lenglen Court
If you have had a ticket for the Suzanne Lenglen Court this week you have not seen a bad day of tennis and those who have one on Thursday certainly won’t be short changed. The number three seed Paula Badosa gets the day underway when she meets Kaja Juvan before the home player Hugo Gaston takes on Pedro Cachin. The overwhelming favourite to win the women’s event is third on this court as Iga Swiatek meets Alison Riske. The final game on the schedule here sees Stefanos Tsitsipas looking to make progress at the expense of Zdenek Kolar.
Simonne Mathieu Court
It is Karolina Pliskova who will open up the action on the third court on Thursday when she faces the French player Leolia Jeanjean. There is a decent men’s match that follows them as Francis Tiafoe meets David Goffin before the former champion Simona Halep takes to the court. She will meet the Chinese player Qinwen Zhang. The last of the matches on this court sees Andrey Rublev taking on the veteran Federico Delbonis in another good men’s clash.

Best of the Rest
This is the final day where a fair amount of singles action will take place across the grounds at Roland Garros in terms of the outside courts. Casper Ruud probably won’t be the most popular man going around after he ended the career of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Tuesday but he is one seed on show. Jessica Pegula, Elena Rybakina, Marin Cilic, Hubert Hurkacz, Danielle Collins, Aryna Sabalenka, Jannik Sinner, Miomir Kecmanovic and Dan Evans are some of the other seeds on show.
Men’s Betting
I’ll take one bet in the men’s draw on Thursday and it comes in the opening match on the main court where I think Laslo Djere can see off the US Open champion Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev came through the opening round easily enough but it was clear the second that Facundo Bagnis stepped onto the court that he couldn’t move and was going to offer no challenge at all but that won’t be the case with Djere who is having a good clay court season.
The win over Ricardas Verankis was the tenth on the clay for Djere in this spring swing and he looks to be finding form. Two of his three losses were against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic where he took the latter to a deciding set tiebreak. This will be just the third match since the Miami Open for Medvedev and while he’ll improve with each one, he’ll need to play better here. Bagnis was on one leg for most of their match and still created nine break point opportunities. Djere is much better than Bagnis and in much better form and I think he’s the man to take care of Medvedev.
Women’s Betting
Camila Giorgi ended a run of seven successive defeats away from the Billie Jean Cup in the first round here and although she won both of her BJC matches, they were against players ranked outside the top 80 in the world so I’m not sure they are much of a form guide. Although the Italian won her first round match she made heavy weather of it and I suspect she is about to meet her match in the form of Yulia Putintseva on Thursday.
The Kazakh has been solid enough on the clay this spring. She made the semi-finals in Istanbul where she suffered a disappointing three set defeat to Anastasia Potapova and since then the only players to beat her on clay were Coco Gauff and Ons Jabeur. In that time Putintseva has seen off Garbine Muguruza and Shelby Rogers among others. Putintseva also had a Billie Jean Cup win over Angelique Kerber in that time so she is playing good tennis at the minute and should be able to cruise past a misfiring Italian.
