The second week of the French Open gets underway with what looks like a potentially excellent day of tennis on the two main show courts at Roland Garros on Sunday as the first half of the quarter final places get filled in the tournament.
Four of the big male names are on show on Sunday and then there is an increasingly interesting bottom half of the women’s draw continuing on what looks like being a wonderful day of tennis for those watching in Paris as well as us at home.
Day 7 Recap
The big names by and large cruised through in the men’s draw on Saturday with Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jannik Sinner and Hubert Hurkacz all come through without dropping a set. Casper Ruud also made it into the last 16 but he had to come through a deciding set to get the better of Lorenzo Sonego. Iga Swiatek won in straight sets again and then saw rivals Paula Badosa and Aryna Sabalenka dumped out. Jessica Pegula made it through.
It was a day to forget for us betting wise on Saturday. Somehow between her last match and the start of this one Alize Cornet developed injuries which saw both of her thighs heavily wrapped to the extent that she couldn’t move. She eventually retired but not soon enough to get us our money back and then after being competitive in the early stages, David Goffin faded fast and made no impression on Hubert Hurkacz to condemn us to two losers on the day.
Philippe Chatrier Court
The action on the main court begins with a couple of women’s matches with perhaps the pick of the games from the ladies draw starting the show when the US Open runner up Leylah Fernandez meets Amanda Anisimova in a clash which could give us an insight into the future of the women’s game. When they are done Coco Gauff will look to reach the last eight when she takes on Elise Mertens. The day session concludes with the pick of the men’s matches on the day as Rafael Nadal bids to make another quarter final at the expense of Felix Auger-Aliassime. The night session sees Carlos Alcaraz looking to entertain the crowds once again when he meets Karen Khachanov.

Suzanne Lenglen Court
The only other court which has singles action on it on Sunday is the Suzanne Lenglen Court and a decent schedule begins with two unseeded players looking to make the most of a huge chance to reach the last eight when Martina Trevisan bids to extend her winning run when she meet Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The defending champion Novak Djokovic will be on court in the second match of the day when he takes on Diego Schwartzman before the Olympic champion Alexander Zverev faces Bernabe Zapata Miralles, who is having the week of his life. The closer on this court sees Jil Teichmann looking to make progress against the only former Grand Slam champion left in this half of the draw in Sloane Stephens.
Betting
I’ll go with one bet over the course of the day and that comes in the first match up on the Suzanne Lenglen Court as Aliaksandra Sasnovich takes on Martina Trevisan. While I understand confidence will be high with the Italian after her win recently and then three wins without dropping a set so far in this tournament, I’m not sure the Belarusian is getting the respect she deserves for her play so far in this competition.
Sasnovich has beaten two Grand Slam champions in the previous two rounds and has hit over 40 winners in both matches in doing so. In both those wins her winner:unforced error ratio was around the 2:1 mark which is world class tennis. In contrast to that, Trevisan has a maximum of 20 winners in her opening three matches. Her toughest opponent in terms of ranking was Magda Linette, who is still only ranked 52, and she recorded 33 unforced errors in a straight set defeat. Trevisan might be high on confidence but she either needs to raise her game significantly or hope that Sasnovich drops off alarmingly. I don’t see either happening. It is Sasnovich for me here.
