The opening matches from Group C of the Gold Cup tournament form the action on Monday night, moving into the early hours of Tuesday morning, as the competition heads to a third different country in as many nights.
Jamaica stages the two fixtures on the evening which sees the co-hosts in action in the second of the games on the card. This looks the most competitive of the four groups so we should get to see better battles than we’ve seen thus far.
Curacao vs El Salvador (00.00)
The first match of the night sees the two lower ranked teams in the group doing battle when Curacao take on El Salvador in what is on paper the easiest match of the lot for the pair of them but it might not turn out that way.
Both these teams have good qualifying campaigns for the Nations League later in the year but El Salvador have really kicked on from there whereas there are one or two holes appearing in the form lines of Curacao. That said, I’m not sure I want to take on a side with a good deal of Dutch heritage and players from the Eredivisie in their ranks. I would marginally favour El Salvador in this match but this is a long tournament and I don’t have to bet on every match so I’ll use this one as a watching brief.
Jamaica vs Honduras (02.30)
The two big guns in Group C meet in the second of the matches on the night when the co-hosts Jamaica take on a Honduras side who may have been up against it in this match anyway but who certainly will be with the match being in Kingston.
Jamaica have made the last two finals in this competition so all eyes will be on them not only to see if they can use home advantage wisely but also to see if they are likely to live up to past glories. Honduras had a decent spell a few years ago but have faded recently and need a big tournament to get themselves back on track I sense.
I’m not sure who I think will win this but I’ve seen a few Honduras matches recently and they are rugged I think it is fair to say. Jamaica are not squeaky clean either so the over 4 Asian cards line looks attractive here. If Jamaica get in front Honduras could easily lose the plot but I expect this to be competitive throughout. In two warm up matches for this tournament Honduras picked up four yellows and a red card and with the pace of the Jamaicans you’ve got to think they’ll mistime some challenges. Jamaica can chip in too so I’ll take over 4 cards.
