Horse Racing – Chester May Meeting – Thursday 9th May Tips & Betting Preview

The second day of the Chester May Meeting takes place on Thursday with the headline race on the card being the Boodles Diamond Ormonde Stakes. With a hotpot as the favourite in that race we are giving that one a swerve but there are two bets on the support card that have caught our eye. They begin in the opening race.

11 runners go to post for this Class 2 handicap over the minimum.  9 of the last 10 winners were drawn in 1 of the lowest 4 stalls and the 3 market leaders today are, unsurprisingly, berthed in 3 of the lowest 4 stalls.

Copper Knight is the favourite and has the plum draw in 1.  He’s a winner of 2 of his 3 races here and is a winner on soft ground on his last start of last year off a mark of 97.  He finished 4th at Musselburgh on his reappearance off today’s mark of 100 and should he improve for that run, he’ll go well.

2nd in that Musselburgh race was Mokaatil who was just under 2 lengths in front of Copper Knight that day.  He’s off a mark of 88 and is 2lb better off with Copper Knight (or 1lb worse off if you account for apprentice claims) but soft ground is an unknown.

Betting

They are both overlooked with the selection being the Richard Fahey trained Fool For You.  She’s drawn in stall 3 and has a very good 5lb claimer on board.  Now a 4 year old, she’s still lightly raced and is progressive having only finished out of the front 3 on 3 occasions.  What appeals most is her liking for soft ground and for a turning sharp track (2 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd) from 4 runs.   Provided the forecast rain arrives and she’s not lacking for fitness (this is her first run of the season), she’s likely to be involved at the business end of this contest.

Tips

Back Fool For You (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 7.00 Betway BOG (1/4 odds 1-3)

A Class 2 handicap for 3 year olds with 12 runners lining up.  The trip is a specialist one of 7 and a half furlongs.  7 of the last 8 winners exited from 1 of the 4 lowest stalls and the last 6 winners had already been seen this season.

King Of Tango is the uneasy favourite, with a draw of 8 and a 6lb higher mark despite failing to win last time out.  What’s more, she’s up in class.

Lolas Theme and Drogon are drawn in 2 of the lowest 4 stalls, they make up half of Tom Dascombe’s 4-pronged assault on this race but neither of them have been seen on the track this year.

Betting

Instead, preference is for Lincoln Park, drawn in 3.  Silvestre De Sousa is back on board and he’s bidding to maintain his 100% record on the horse having won on his one ride on this Mick Appleby colt.  He won 2 handicaps last term off 77 and 83, and is rated 85 now.   After those wins, his mark was raised and he put in a couple of shockers in straight track handicaps when misjudging the pace and trying to dictate from the front.  He showed more last time when 4th of 7 over a mile where he ruined his chance by taking a keen hold and failing to last home.  Back on a turning track, over half a furlong shorter and with a better judge of pace taking the reins, he should be tough to pass especially as the ground is coming in his favour.

Tips

WON – Back Lincoln Park (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 7.00 William Hill BOG (¼ odds 1-3)
