After a really good weekend of action at Newmarket, the racing continues on Sunday with five meetings taking place over the UK and Ireland, with a mixture of flat racing and jumps stuff forming the action.
They run at Lingfield, Hamilton, Dundalk and Cork on the flat and there is also a jumps meeting over at Bangor. We’re focusing on the flat stuff at present and our one bet comes late in the afternoon at Cork.

16 head to post for this mile Premier Handicap at Cork. Bucky Larson assumes favouritism after winning his last 2 in lower grade handicaps which has since seen his mark rise by 13lbs. However, he won both with something to spare & is hard to keep out of calculations. Tauran Shaman, from the excellent Jessica Harrington yard, is still lightly raced but has something to prove after 3 poor runs in succession albeit you can find excuses if you look hard enough.
For me, there was a 7 furlong handicap run at Leopardstown 3 weeks ago that holds the key to this race. The first 3 home all re-oppose here with the winner Turbine bidding to win back to back handicaps. He won by half a length that day but has 6lbs more to contend with. Back in 3rd was Lord Rapscallion who since run again off a 2lb higher mark & won but is now a further 6lbs higher so has it all to do on these terms.

2nd that day, and our selection today, is Equitant. He’s 3lbs higher today but is weighted to turn the tables. He has half a length to find with the winner but is 3lbs better off & is 5lbs better off with the horse that finished behind him. In that Leopardstown race contested by 16, the first 6 home were separated by just 3 lengths. 3 of those have run since (3rd, 4th & 6th horses home) and all of them have won including Big Baby Bull (4th at Leopardstown) who has gone on to land a valuable Premier Handicap at the Curragh.
Since moving to Ireland in 2018, he won his first 2 races off marks of 85 & 89 (off 86 today), before finishing 2nd off 95. His form then tailed off but that’s seen him back on a good mark & he showed signs of a definite revival on his first run since moving to Mick Halford’s yard for Joseph O’Brien’s. If he can build on that, he should go close off a mark well within range.
That first run for Halford can be marked up considering the form of the yard last month. From 44 runners, they had just the 1 winner & 4 second’s. This month already, he’s saddled 4 winners & 5 seconds from just over half the runners (28). There’s plenty in the selection’s favour, including a step back up to his favourite trip of a mile and he’s fancied to go very well.
