Horse Racing: Doncaster – Friday 28th April Tips and Betting Preview

With May around the corner, the weather improving and the opening classics of the season fast approaching, the flat season continues in the UK on Friday with meetings at Sandown and at Doncaster.

The former will need to pass an inspection after a serious amount of rain down south but there are no such problems at the northern venue. A scour through that particular race card has thrown up a bet in the opener.

Preview

The only real betting proposition on the flat is the first race at Donny, where there’s a field of 19 racing over 7 furlongs in a low grade handicap.  The betting for this is very open with bookies going 6/1 the field.  Two Summers is a front runner who has finished 3rd twice on her 2 runs to date this season but she’s been beaten over 4 lengths on each occasion.  Hoots Toots, the mount of Joanna Mason, has won his last 3 but a 5lb rise in the weights and a step up in grade will make this difficult.  Jems Bond is better on the all weather with all of his 6 career wins coming on the sand whilst Albeseeingyer has won her last 3 over this trip and is only 2lbs higher so should go well if appreciating this slower surface.

Fiftyshadesofred – The top weight might be the way to go here.  Hailing from a stable going well with 3 of their last 12 runners winning, this relatively lightly raced 5 year old has been given a huge chance by the handicapper.  A year ago, he won a Class 4 handicap on the all weather at Newcastle over this trip off a mark of 80 yet comes here a full 13lbs lower.  His form since has been poor with a 4th of 12 at Chelmsford off 79 his best subsequent run last calendar year.  After a low key reappearance, he improved significantly to finish less than 2 lengths 3rd off a mark of 72 where he finished well and may appreciate a stiffer test of stamina which he’ll get here.  The handicapper has reacted by dropping him 5lbs and a mark of 67 as well as his first run in this grade seems very lenient indeed.  One last point of note, he’s clearly regarded better because, as a 3 year old, he went off favourite in a maiden won by none other than Baaeed.  Whilst he was comfortably beaten, it’s another indication that he’s much better than this class.
