As well it is being a big day of racing over in France on Sunday, it is another top quality day of action in the UK too, as less than 24hrs after that amazing Investec Derby, we have the Coral Eclipse taking centre stage.
In the UK and Ireland on Sunday there are meetings at Sandown, where the Coral Eclipse headlines the card, as well as Haydock Park, Doncaster, Fairyhouse and Cork. The Eclipse tempts us into action but that is one to watch and savour. Instead our two bets come elsewhere in the UK.

13 go to the post for this Class 3 handicap for 3 year olds, over a trip of 7 furlongs. There are 3 vying for favouritism, all around the 9/2 mark. Society Lion from the Sir Michael Stoute yard beat Jumaira Bay on heavy ground by almost 3 lengths as a 2 year old. He’s 4lbs worse off today but should be able to frank the form if he improves on a disappointing reappearance.
Tommy De Vito finished well over 6 furlongs last time but I’m not sure he’s crying out for the extra furlong, especially on the likely soft ground. Newbolt has won his last 2, beating subsequent winner Chairmanic last time out but he’s disappointed the only time he encountered cut in the ground.
Betting
At a bigger price, Magical Max is the bet. He won both his starts as a juvenile & recorded an excellent RPR of 82 on debut which is the best of any in this field. On reappearance, he was only 4th when favourite but that was over an insufficient trip of 5 furlongs. He did step up markedly last time out when 2nd over 6 furlongs behind a progressive type that’s likely to be racing in Group company before too long.
Off the same mark as that run and with the extra furlong likely to suit on breeding, the son of Coach House should go really close & his chances will be enhanced the more rain that falls. It’s hard to see him out of the first 4 and, if he was trained by one of the big yards, he’d be half his current odds.
Tips
Back Magical Max (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 9.00 William Hill BOG (1/5 odds 1-4)

The Old Newton Cup is the feature on the Haydock card with this ultra competitive Class 2 handicap over a mile and a half. Soft ground is assured & there’s expected to be 16 doing battle. Ranch Hand won over an extra 2 furlongs here last year but has since disappointed in the Cesarewitch &, to a lesser degree, in the Copper Horse at Royal Ascot. This trip looks a bit sharp.
Laafy won really well on reappearance, clear by 4 lengths but has gone up 9lbs in mark. Babbos Boy is another to have seen his mark rise, this time by 7lbs, after winning here last time out. The race that could hold the key here is the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot as the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th all re-oppose today. Scarlet Dragon & Deja fought out the finish that day but they’ve been hit with 7lb & 5lb rises respectively. Indianapolis was 5th but it’s the one who finished 2 lengths in front of him that has our backing.
Betting
Le Don De Vie was 4th in the Duke Of Edinburgh & races off the same mark of 101 here. He’s a lightly raced 4 year old (just 9 career starts) & looks the one open to the most improvement. Last year, he won 3 times off marks of 81, 86 & 96 and I’m not sure he’s reached his ceiling yet.
The yard has stated that he’s come on for that run & today’s jockey, Tom Marquand, rates him as his best ride of the weekend. He seems to appreciate soft ground too so has plenty in his favour as, unlike many of his main market rivals, he still appears to be on a winning mark. 4 year olds have a good record in this race & with no winner under 8/1 in the last 10 years, he seems to tick all the boxes & I expect him to go very close indeed.
