In case you managed to miss it, racing returns to England on Monday as the first meeting since the coronavirus stopped the action takes place on the all-weather up in Newcastle. This is the first day of a hectic schedule for the next few months where the bigger and better races come thick and fast.
For now we have relatively low fayre to get stuck into on racing’s return but given how good it is to have it back, nobody is going to complain at that. We’ve scoured the card up and down and picked out on bet to complement our selections out in France.

The 6th race back after the enforced break is a 6 furlong Class 5 handicap for 3 year old sprinters, with a maximum field of 12.
The front 2 in the market have yet to progress out of novice company so are unexposed but their prices are a little skinny. The favourite, from the Crisford yard, is Rock Of Diamonds who has finished 2nd & 3rd in his 2 starts on the turning all weather tracks. He’s a must for any shortlist but, with so many questions first time up over fitness, you’re better searching out the value. Oakenshield is battling for favouritism & has raced twice on soft / heavy ground, showing promise in both starts. This is his first start since having wind surgery & he does have the assistance of Atzeni in the saddle.
Written Broadcast has claims on his early season form last term but has since moved yards, whilst Alix James has been backed following a last time out win at Musselburgh but, on a line through the selection, has it all to do.

The selection is What A Business who had a busy and impressive 2 year old campaign. He raced 7 times over this trip, winning one, but was never out of the first 4. In 3 rides under today’s jockey, he finished 4th at Ripon off a mark of 65 but won the race on his side before getting off the mark next time out off the same mark. Off a revised mark of 71, he was going well at Hamilton before fading when meeting the rising ground to finish a close 3rd, all 3 of those runs in this grade.
3 runs followed, all with some promise; first, he was 2nd in a big nursery when stepped up to Class 2, narrowly losing out to a horse that’s since won a Listed race and is rated 25lbs higher than when winning that heat. Our selection, on the other hand, is just 2lbs higher. In a Class 3 next time, he was 3rd of 13 with the front 3 pulling 3 lengths clear of 4th so that form looks solid. That was off 75, the same mark as when having no chance at York because of a poor draw. Even then, he was the best of the high drawn horses. Dropped markedly in grade, eased 1lb in the handicap and with Ben Curtis back on top, he looks sure to run a good race at a big price.
